Shandee Blackburn Biography
Who was Shandee Blackburn ?
The harrowing triple-zero call made after a young woman’s throat was slit in a murder that shocked Australia has emerged as part of a new podcast series.
Shandee Blackburn, 23, died after being brutally stabbed more than 20 times while walking home from a shift at the Harrup Park Country Club in Mackay, Queensland in February 2013.
She was just a few feet from the house she shared with her mother Vicki hers when CCTV captured a mysterious figure running towards her.
Her larynx was severed and she crawled to a nearby gutter, unable to call for help before dying in the hospital.wikipedia
Australia’s Chief National Correspondent Hedley Thomas is investigating the murder of Ms Blackburn as part of his new Shandee’s Story investigative podcast series.
In a trailer for the podcast, a distraught passerby can hear the audio of the frantic call made to emergency services.
“His head is over the gutter, he is not moving,” says the man.
He’s bleeding, can you hurry up? She is fainting, her pulse is weakening. ‘
Blackburn’s sister Shannah said she heard the triple-zero call for the first time during the preview snippet for the podcast.
Ms Blackburn’s mother said she tries to remember her daughter in the moments before she was killed, where she was “comfortable in her own skin.”
“I can never think about what happened that night alone here; I try to focus on those 40m (before the attack), where I was happy and at peace,” she told Thomas on the show.
That’s what I have to think about. I can’t think about this. She is alone and I am up there and I am not able to protect her.
The podcast will include new interviews with witnesses and individuals involved in the case, and Thomas hopes the series will do justice to the Blackburn family.
Ms Blackburn’s ex-boyfriend, John Peros, was initially a suspect in the case, but after being charged with his murder, he was acquitted in 2017 and maintains his innocence.
However, during a two-week investigation in July last year, Central Queensland Coroner David O’Connell said that Peros was most likely responsible for his death.
In relaying the findings of the investigation, Coroner O’Connell said there was “no doubt” in his mind that Mr. Peros was the one who attacked Ms. Blackburn and caused her injuries.
Arrested and Charged
It came after O’Connell heard evidence that a vehicle similar to Peros’ white Toyota Hilux was seen near the area where Ms. Blackburn was attacked.
Despite the coroner’s findings, Peros will not be arrested or charged because he has already been acquitted of murder.
New and compelling evidence should come to light for the police to arrest him under dual criminality laws, which the coroner could not find.
Peros, who was an amateur boxer, has always denied involvement in the crime.
