Sgt Lisa Bateman Biography

Who was Sgt Lisa Bateman?

Sergeant Lisa Bateman, a 34-year-old mother of three from Cleator Moor, Cumbria, struggled trying to be “the perfect daughter, soldier and mother” and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. She was found hanged in her home on July 7, 2020.

She served as a combat medic instructor at York, but a senior member of her staff harassed, undermined and then assaulted her while she was there, an investigation has heard.

Her father, Mark Bateman, told Cockermouth Coroner’s Court that her daughter was “a generous, sweet and well-intentioned person”.

However, he said the harassment and assault were a matter of “great distress” for her.

He was close to her daughter and was due to meet her at Whitehaven on the day of her death. When she didn’t show up, he went to her house where he found her in the garage, unconscious.

‘During lockdown, a long-distance relationship came to an end. This hit her very hard, she felt that she was always being rejected.’

“The world did him a disservice,” she said.

Her father told the inquest that she was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

“She was one of three, a happy girl, a bit of a tomboy,” she said.

She rebelled a bit when she was a teenager, she said, but later joined the army.

She ‘she stood up and took tremendous steps. She enjoyed herself and stood out,’ she said.

She was sent to Germany and “she was doing very well, she was very happy in the forces,” Mr. Bateman said. She lived with her partner and they had a son.

“This was the final building block and she put her life in her place,” she said.

The situation changed over the years.

“Unfortunately, when her partner was sent elsewhere, the relationship fell apart. Lisa became a single mother of three with a growing career.

She moved to a post in Harrogate, was quickly promoted to sergeant, and moved to York, where she became a combat medic instructor.

A senior member of her staff harassed her, undermined her and then assaulted her, Bateman said. She had also served time in Iraq.

“She was diagnosed with extreme post-traumatic stress disorder and depression,” Mr. Bateman said.

He and her partner, Sergeant Bateman’s stepmother, had moved to New Zealand in 2008 but returned home to support her.

They moved to Whitehaven in February 2020. Sergeant Bateman moved to Cleator Moor the following month.

His mother, Carol Scholes, told the inquest: “She suffered from depression for many years. She felt that she had to be the perfect daughter, soldier and mother.

Area Coroner Kirsty Gomersal heard that Sergeant Bateman had been referred to the Department of Community Health at the Ministry of Defense in July 2019 and a multi-agency plan of care was put in place.

The investigation heard from a number of mental health professionals and key workers who had regularly engaged with Sergeant Bateman. She was on medication.

She had previously overdosed and claimed that she was not suicidal, but that she had been struggling to sleep.

Sergeant Bateman was due to be medically discharged from the Army in September 2020 and she was receiving support as she transitioned from military to civilian life.

The medical cause of death was pending. She tested positive for covid and had alcohol in her system, she revealed a toxicology report.

The amount of alcohol she had “would make her emotionally unstable and lose her critical judgment,” Ms. Gomersal said.

There was no evidence of her prescribed medication in her system.

“Sergeant Bateman was a beloved mother, daughter and sister,” the coroner said.

She was a proud member of the British Army.

‘Those who got to know her held her in high regard. They found her attractive, polite and generous.

She ‘she found her feet in the army.’

Her father said she was subjected to harassment and assault, Ms. Gomersal said. That was a matter of great distress and she was diagnosed with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“She had been prescribed medication and she was participating in mental health services,” she said.

“There were a number of stresses in her life at the time of death, on the balance of probability, Lisa intended to take her own life.”

She offered ‘my deepest condolences on the tragic loss of her’ to her parents and family.
