Sergio Mingote has died during an escalation of K2, the second highest summit on the planet, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Saturday (January 16). It was the last peak above 8,000 m that was exceeded in winter.
Mingote fell through a crevasse while trying to go down to base camp, Karrar Haidri, secretary of the Pakistan Alpine Club, told Reuters. Around 49 climbers in various teams are in K2 trying to reach the top, weather permitting.
Mingote, had climbed seven mountains over 8,000 m without supplemental oxygen in less than two years. Climbed for the first time in 1954 by the Italian Achille Compagnoni, the K2 is known for its slopes and strong winds, and in winter its surface turns to slippery ice. Of the 367 people who had completed their promotion in 2018, 86 had passed away.
Located on the border between Pakistan and China, K2 is the only mountain above 8,000m that had not been reached in winter.
The group was named as Nirmal Purja, Gelje Sherpa, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma G, Sona Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Pem Chhiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, and Dawa Tenjing Sherpa.
The coronavirus pandemic saw travel restrictions severely affect the traditional summer mountaineering season in the Karakoram mountain range and in Pakistan in particular, which is home to five of the world’s 14 peaks over 8,000 meters.

News of his death came when a Nepalese team claimed the first winter ascent of Pakistan’s K2.
The Pakistani army is regularly called in to rescue climbers using helicopters, but the weather often makes it difficult.
The highest altitude previously reached on K2 in winter was 7,750 m by Denis Urubko and Marcin Kaczkan, established almost two decades ago.
The group of Sherpas that reached the summit on Saturday had stopped at a point 70 meters from the peak to wait for each other before going up to the world history books together at 4.56 p.m.
