Who is Satoru Nomura ?

Satoru Nomura told the Fukuoka District Court judge in western Japan on Tuesday: “I asked for a fair decision … You will regret this for the rest of your life,” the newspaper reported. Nishinippon Shimbun.

It is believed to be the first time that a high-ranking member of the yakuza has been sentenced to death, the BBC reported.

Nomura, the head of the ‘Kudo-kai’ crime syndicate in southwestern Japan, denied the allegations of having been the mastermind behind the violent assaults. Kudo-kai is often described as the “most violent” yakuza gang in Japan.

According to the Japanese broadcaster NHK, there was no direct evidence that Nomura had ordered the attacks.

However, when passing the sentence, the judge said that the gang operated under such strict rules that it was unthinkable that the attacks had been carried out without the authorization of their leader.

The trial revolved around attacks carried out by members of Kudo-kai between 1998 and 2014. During that time, a former head of a fishing cooperative was shot dead and three others, including a nurse and a former police officer, were found to be wounded by gunshots or stabbing.

Nomura’s defense attorneys plan to appeal the ruling, according to the Kyodo news agency. Nomura’s number two, Fumio Tanoue, was jailed for life on Tuesday, the court said.

The yakuza mafia was long tolerated in Japan as a necessary evil to ensure order in the streets and get things done quickly, however dubious the means.

But in recent decades, stricter anti-gang regulations, waning social tolerance, and a weak economy have resulted in a steady decline in yakuza memberships.

Nomura was found guilty of ordering the fatal shooting in 1998 of a former head of a fishing cooperative that was influencing port construction projects, mainstream media said.

He was also behind a 2014 attack on a family member of the murder victim and a 2013 knife attack on a nurse at a clinic where Nomura was seeking treatment, the court reportedly said.

The 2012 shooting of a former police officer who had investigated Kudo-kai was also deemed Nomura’s responsibility. The official survived with serious injuries to his waist and legs, the media said.

The yakuza went from the chaos of postwar Japan to multi-million dollar criminal organizations, involved in everything from drugs and prostitution to protection fraud and white collar crime.

Unlike the Italian mafia or Chinese triads, the yakuza have long occupied a gray area in Japanese society: they are not illegal and each group has its own headquarters in full view of the police.

With more than 100 prisoners on death row, Japan is one of the few developed countries that maintains the death penalty.

Public support for the death penalty remains high despite international criticism, including from human rights groups.
