Police say the weapon was a pocket knife with a two-and-a-half-inch blade.
On Tuesday, May 11, Newport News Police Department (NNPD) Chief Steve Drew held a press conference to provide more information regarding the May 10 death of an infant and malicious wounding of his sibling.
On Monday evening, John Howard was not at home when he received a text message from his fiancé, Sarah Whitney Ganoe, describing the scene at the apartment that they shared. This prompted Howard to call 911 while he was rushing to get to the scene. Living at the apartment was also Ganoe’s 8-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, and the couple’s 10-month-old son, Zell. The identity of the 8-year-old daughter is being withheld at this time.
Police Report and Charged
A neighbor says that Ganoe had told him directly that he liked witchcraft.
“He told me that he liked to dive a little bit into witchcraft,” said Clay Connell.
“Don’t be sad, but the house will be bloody when you get there,” was the text message Ganoe sent to her fiancé John Howard on Monday night, according to police.
Police say Howard found a large amount of blood in several bedrooms and found Ganoe and her two children lying on the bed in the master bedroom.
The police report says that after the police read Miranda’s rights to her, she admitted to the stabbings. Ganoe told them she had bruises on her hand and arm from the way she was trying to put force behind the stabbings, and she had a bite mark on her arm that police believed was an attempt by her daughter to fight for get free.
Connell says that when she found out what happened in her building, it was the worst thing he had ever heard from her.
“I mean there were multiple stab wounds on both children, it was very heartbreaking. No child deserves something like that, ”he said.
Ganoe was indicted Wednesday on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and neglect, and aggravated malicious wounds. Her next court date is scheduled for May 20.
