Rodriguez left San Jose with her son on May 24, traveling first to Southern California and then to Nevada, Spencer said. We can place them in the Laguna Beach area on the afternoon of May 26, ”Spencer said. “Later that afternoon, we know the vehicle was in the Victorville, California area.”
A hiker found the boy’s body on May 28 on State Route 160 near Mountain Springs, west of Las Vegas. Investigators believe his body was recently placed there and that he was the victim of a homicide.
Investigators were tipped off by a family friend that he had not seen Rodríguez or her son for some time and saw news coverage of a child’s body found in the desert.
“The family friend said she didn’t see Samantha or Liam in over two weeks,” Spencer said. “She saw the news coverage of our case here in Las Vegas and saw the composite sketch that was sent to the media. After seeing that, she thought the sketch looked like Liam. ”
Police said they sent an investigator to San José to collect Liam’s clothes and a pillow, which they used to positively identify the boy’s body through DNA. After the discovery of the boy’s body, investigators found that Rodríguez continued to travel in the same vehicle.
“Soon after, on May 29, we discovered that the car was traveling on I-70 near Grand Junction, Colorado,” Spencer said. “The last contact anyone had seen from Samantha was in a hotel room in the Denver area on May 31, when she checked in on her own.”
Police were urging anyone with additional information about Rodríguez to come forward. Liam’s father was not considered a suspect in his murder. Police said they approached them after not hearing from Rodriguez or Liam, but never thought the boy was in danger.
A woman identified as Shirley Rogers said on a Facebook page dedicated to Liam that the 7-year-old had special needs.
“I’ll tell you it’s a heartbreaking conversation,” Spencer said of her conversation with the boy’s father. “These last 10 days have been very emotional for me, for all the researchers who have been working on it. And we’re happy that we can get Liam closed and then hold the person responsible for this crime accountable. ”
A nationwide arrest warrant has been issued for Rodríguez. Police are searching for his vehicle, which is a dark blue 2008 Dodge Caliber hatchback, California license plate 6WLH211.
