Who is Salim Hamze ?

The blatant daylight murder of two members of Sydney’s famous Hamze family is the latest in a series of blatant heists ordered against the underworld clan.

Salim Hamze, 18, and his father Toufik, 64, were found dead on a red street on Osgood Street in Guildford in the west of the city on Wednesday morning.wikipedia

The couple are the third and fourth family members to be shot and killed in the space of a year and the shooting is believed to be part of a bloody street war between the Alameddine and Hamze clans (sometimes referred to as ‘Hamzy’).

Brother

In June, Bilal Hamze, the crime boss cousin of Brothers for Life founder Bassam Hamzy, was executed in a drive-by shooting after leaving the Kid Kyoto restaurant on Bridge St in Sydney’s CBD.

Bilal, 34, had a bounty on his head when he was shot twice in the stomach and one in the shoulder in front of shocked onlookers.

Crime

Bilal was hiding in the city amid the underworld conflict with members of the rival Alameddine clan.

His public murder came after his own mother Maha Hamze’s Auburn home was the subject of a drive-by shooting in February.

No one inside was injured, but a nurse at a nearby hospital was injured when a stray bullet destroyed a window near which she was standing.

In October last year, Mejid Hamzy, Bassam’s younger brother, was shot and killed in broad daylight outside his Condell Park home.

Two brothers allegedly linked to the Alameddine family have been arrested in the fatal shooting of Mejid, but police believe the gunmen are still at large.

A friend of the Alameddine family was seriously assaulted with a stick in the days before Mejid was shot and killed.

CCTV footage

In September, police released CCTV footage of two hooded men fleeing the scene moments after Mejid was shot and killed as they continued to search for the killers.

CCTV captured the distinctive blonde hair and face of one of the men they briefly exposed after his hoodie fell off as he fled the scene through the reservation before hopping into two luxury cars.

Meanwhile, Bassam Hamzy is serving a 40-year sentence inside Australia’s harshest prison, Goulburn’s Supermax, for a number of crimes, including those he commissioned from behind bars.

In 2007, Bassam established the Brothers 4 Life gang from his jail cell before using a secret phone network to coordinate his crimes, including a massive network of drug traffickers.

Family

Mejid and Bassam’s father, Khaled Hamzy, died last August after a long battle with the disease, and the most infamous member of the family was not allowed to attend the funeral or watch from jail.

The patriarch of the Khaled family first moved his family to Australia in the 1970s when the civil war broke out in Lebanon.

Khaled himself was jailed for his role in a highly sophisticated drug syndicate in the 1990s.

His children were quick to follow in his criminal footsteps, with Bassam Hamzy convicted in 1999 of the murder of a teenager outside a Sydney nightclub.

Bassam’s cousin Mahmoud, a fellow Brothers 4 Life, was also shot and killed in 2013 when he was caught in the middle of an attack on another cousin, Mohammed ‘Little Crazy’ Hamzy.

Mohammed, again a Brothers 4 Life devotee, was stabbed in prison in October 2020, where he is serving time for shooting two men in 2012.

Retired New South Wales detective turned Western Sydney University professor Michael Kennedy told Daily Mail Australia in June that he has seen generations of organized crime groups in Sydney.

He said that despite tough police tactics, opposing these groups is not, in his opinion, the best way to go.

Shady Kanj, 22, was shot and killed

Shady Kanj, 22, was shot and killed in western Sydney in August in an incident believed to be linked to the Hamzy and Alameddine gangs.

“If he uses the word ‘mafia’, he gives the wrong idea, but it is essentially the same in the sense that he has a very tight-knit system,” said Professor Kennedy.

In August, Shady Kanj, 22, was killed in a shooting in western Sydney, believed to be linked to the Hamzy and Alameddine gangs.

Paramedics were called in and treated Kanj, but he died from his injuries at the scene.

A second man who was sitting in a car parked on Boundary Rd with his brother when the gunman opened fire was also shot.

He was watching sports on a mobile phone when a stray bullet hit him in the head, but somehow he survived.
