Who was Russell Woolf ?

Russell Woolf, beloved host of the ABC Perth radio show Breakfast, died suddenly at age 57.

His death was announced on the air by his colleague Geoff Hutchison on Tuesday, with Western Australian Prime Minister Mark McGowan among those paying tribute.

“We have really sad news to share with you this morning that our dear friend and colleague Russell Woolf died this morning,” Hutchinson said.

‘It has been a great impact for us. Today is a sad day ‘.

Woolf had worked at the national broadcaster since 1997. He is believed to have died in his sleep.Woolf died in his sleep unexpectedly in the early morning of October 26, 2021. His death was announced on ABC Radio Perth by Woolf’s colleague, Geoff Hutchison. Among those who paid tribute to Woolf were Western Australian Prime Minister Mark McGowan and Nadia Mitsopoulos.

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of local media legend Russell Woolf,” McGowan tweeted.

His unique and iconic voice, wit and personality made him loved by countless Western Australians. For many of us, whether we know him personally or not, it will feel like we’ve lost a friend today.

“My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”

Former ABC host Glenn Mitchell said on Perth radio that “Rusty” “always had a smile on his face.”

“He was always this lush, shiny, bubbly… he was larger than life, with a huge head of hair. It looked like an unmade bed, but people just loved it, ” Mitchell said.

Personal life

Woolf was married and the couple had a daughter, born in 2008.

Career

Woolf was born and raised in Perth. After finishing high school, she spent a year in Israel before returning to Perth to study at the University of Western Australia and Curtin University. In her mid-20s, she studied broadcasting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He worked as a presenter for 6SE Radio West in Esperance for 18 months, then spent two years at 6KG in Kalgoorlie, before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1997 as their Karratha-based resource reporter, a position he held for five years.  Woolf later returned to Perth, where he co-hosted the 720 evening show with Verity James. In 2005 he took over the Late Afternoon Drive program, where he remained until he resigned from ABC in December 2013.

Woolf was also the weather anchor for Perth’s ABC News from 2007 to 2011. The role was removed by ABC for budgetary reasons; Later the time was presented by the main announcer (Karina Carvalho at that time)

Former West Coast Eagles AFL player Will Schofield posted a video on Twitter of Woolf dancing to Britney Spears at ABC Radio studios after Schofield accused him of playing “old” music on the station.

Another of Schofield’s tweets simply said, ‘I love and miss you buddy.’

Hutchison recalled that Woolf had brought her a chubby Coopers Pale Ale after his first season hosting a morning show in June 2006.

“ He brought it straight to the studio and said, ‘have it, you deserve it.

‘Simply the most beautiful, beautiful friend.’

Woolf had been the ABC TV weathercaster for four years, from 2007 to 2011.

He had also been an unsuccessful political candidate for a Western Australian Senate seat in 2014.

Woolf was also widely remembered Tuesday for his love of bowling and his regular role as the MC of countless charity and community events.
