Who was Rozara Estevez?
Police discovered a mother and her six-year-old daughter dead in the Bronx. They were stabbed multiple times at her home on Monticello Ave.
Sources told Eyewitness News that the suspect behind the deaths of Gabrielle Muniz, 26, and Rozara Estevez, 6, is Muniz’s boyfriend.
“I had an idea that my baby was going to end up dead. I feel like I’m in shock, keeping him pretty calm,” said Muniz’s mother, Yanik Rocha.
Police arrived at the ground floor apartment just before midnight on Saturday night for a welfare check and made a shocking discovery. One of the investigators said it was the worst thing she had ever seen.
Death
Sources say the girl was found dead in her bed, under the covers and stabbed in the head. Muniz was also dead inside the house, where three knives were located.
“The girl was very promising, my daughter was an incredible mother, she was a single mother and she did everything on her own: go to school, study medicine, pharmacology,” added Rocha.
Sources told Eyewitness News that security cameras at the crime scene show Caleb Duberry leaving the house. Muniz’s mother says that Duberry was dating his daughter, but that he was not the girl’s father.
About 12 hours after the killings, police received a call from a man involved in a homicide who was barricaded inside an eighth-floor apartment in a nearby building. Sources say that man was Duberry, who ended up taking his own life.
Family
Muniz’s father, Ricardo, told Eyewitness News reporter Kemberly Richardson that he was concerned last year and asked police to check on his daughter.
“Of course he was scared, so when there was a knock on his door, supposedly everything was fine,” he said.
He added that Duberry didn’t like Muniz’s career goals and even he became violent.
“She told me that he used to hit her. She broke his laptop because he was jealous of her profession,” he added.
