                                                        Rory Hooper Biography

Swampy’s son, Rory Hooper, 16, has left him in tunnels below Euston where they were protesting the HS2 project, declaring, “I’m looking forward to seeing Mom.”

Rory had spent 22 days living underground in a movement that some quarters had criticized as poor parenting.

When he came out of the tunnel they put him on a stretcher and took him to safety.

But the teenager, who lives in Tipi Valley in Wales, previously insisted that the battle to stop the £ 98bn project was worth it.

He said: ‘After almost three weeks underground, I’m going up. This means that there will be more food for the others so they can hold out longer. Dad stays in the tunnel and will hang on for as long as he can. I hope to see mom.

‘I have loved digging and being underground and will keep protesting, HS2 needs to be stopped. Young people like me have to act to stop the ecocide that projects like HS2 are committing because we are in an ecological emergency and our future is at stake.

“Digging a tunnel may seem extreme, but it may be the only way.”

A statement issued by HS2 Rebellion from his mother said: ‘I am very proud of Rory, he and other young people have stood up for what they believe with courage and conviction and we must listen to what they are saying.

“Being involved in the protest has been an incredible experience for Rory, I have seen him develop so many new skills and grow in confidence. I think Rory is looking forward to some home cooked food and time at home. Now I ask that my family’s privacy be respected. ‘

Swampy, whose real name is Daniel Hooper, had been criticized for allowing him to be in the tunnels, which have suffered several collapses.

Both the father and son helped build the underground structures in protest of the HS2 high-speed rail and its financial and environmental costs.

Pro-HS2 MP Andrew Mitchell told The Sun: ‘Swampy’s son should be studying as best he can for his next exam, not at the end of a dangerous tunnel.

“His father is being reckless and irresponsible.”

A rescue expert had warned that heavy rain and sleet could cause the tunnels under Euston in London to collapse and endanger HS2 activists living in the underground passages.

Swampy has spoken about his son joining the protest, adding: “I didn’t want Rory to be in the eviction tunnel to begin with, but he was absolutely convinced that he would stay there with me.”

The HS2 Rebellion group is protesting in Euston Square Gardens because they believe the small green space will be leveled to make way for a temporary taxi rank before being sold to developers.

In addition to staying in the tunnels, other activists used trees to protest, although cherry pickers arrived over the weekend to dismantle the structures.

The group now says that eviction teams are digging over their heads, and protesters stayed up all night to “get us out of the hole,” the BBC reports.

The protesters have not said how many are in hiding, but are confident they will be able to hold the protest for a few more days.

One protester said: ‘All night we have had rocks falling on our heads through the gaps.

They have kept us up all night for hours and hours and hours to keep us awake and try to get us out of the hole.

‘All the dirt is still falling down my sleeves. It’s not the most pleasant of experiences, it’s pretty unpleasant to be fair. ‘

Some of the protesters outside the tunnels have been arrested.

The eviction team has removed the roof of the structure that protects the front of the tunnel.
