Ronald Koeman Wiki
Ronald Koeman Biography
Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has discussed the possibility of the Catalan giants signing a new number 9 in the January transfer window.
The Dutchman was asked in his pre-match press conference ahead of Barça’s Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday if the club would dive into the transfer market in January.
Everyone knows my position on this and the two positions that we are missing but it all depends on the financial situation of the club in January, so we have to wait. I don’t want to force it because knowing the situation I don’t want to pressure. If it is not possible, we work with what we have. That is the situation.
Koeman said in the summer that he wanted to bring in a new center-back and a No. 9 and clearly hasn’t changed his mind since. The club has no options on defense currently, with Ronald Araujo injured and Samuel Umtiti not recovered.
Meanwhile, Barça allowed forward Luis Suárez to leave for Atlético de Madrid for the summer, but failed to bring in a replacement for the Uruguayan international.
Barca Lacking Goals
Goals have certainly been a problem for Barça this season. Captain Lionel Messi has yet to score in open play, while Antoine Griezmann only opened his account at the weekend against Alavés.
Koeman also explained in his press conference that he feels his team is creating enough opportunities, but needs to be more clinical in front of goal if they want to improve on their recent results.
Meanwhile, Suárez hasn’t had such problems since leaving Barcelona. The 33-year-old has scored four La Liga goals in five appearances for Diego Simeone’s men so far in 2020-21.
Nunez or Depay?
Barcelona is still linked to several attackers. Benfica forward Darwin Núñez has recently emerged as a possible option after some dazzling performances for the Portuguese team in the league and in Europe.
Lyon captain Memphis Depay is another possibility and knows Koeman well from his time alongside the Dutch national team. The Barça manager told AD in October that he expected Barça to try to sign Depay again in January.
However, the financial situation of the club will determine whether they will be able to sign more players in January. The interim president Carlos Tusquets spoke about the possibility of signings this Monday, according to the official website of the club.
I feel like we should only make a move if a player can have zero cost. Or if a player is sold on the transfer window, then we could buy. But all these decisions can be reversed in the next presidency. If the new Board wants to go back on everything we decide, then they are free to do so.
It may be that Barcelona and Koeman have to settle for what they have until the end of the season. The season could bring many changes with the arrival of a new president, while Barça may also be looking for a replacement for Lionel Messi if he does not agree to extend his contract that expires next summer.
