Who is Romy Vilsaint?
The distraught father whose 12-year-old son died after being attacked at school for what may have been a $ 1 challenge was overwhelmed with grief Saturday and blamed the boy’s classmates.
“My son was beaten at school. They kill him, ”sobbed Romain Vilsaint, 59, speaking Creole while a neighbor translated. “Oh God, I lost my son, I lost my son.”
Romy Vilsaint was barely conscious at the family’s Flatbush home on Friday and was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died. The NYPD is investigating.
The medical examiner said Saturday that the cause and manner of Romy’s death were “pending further study, but there is no trauma.”
For Romy’s father, an immigrant from Haiti, the death had an extra layer of tragedy. His eldest son died in a motorcycle accident in Haiti in 2018.

“He’s my only child, just one,” she said of Romy, who had three older sisters, two in the United States and one in Haiti, and two younger twin sisters who live in Haiti with their mother.
Vilsaint said Romy’s mother told her, “Send my son back (to) Haiti,” to be buried there.
“I can’t speak anymore,” said the grieving father, patting his chest and heading to his bedroom.
Romy moved to the US in 2017. He was in the fifth grade at PS 361, The Nostrand School.
His family said the boy complained of a headache Wednesday, but didn’t tell them until later that two boys attacked him. They do not know where or what caused the incident.
He went to school on Thursday, where he was hit on the head by a child allegedly paid for by a classmate. He spent the day in the infirmary complaining of a terrible headache.
Vilsaint listened to the voicemail message that her son left him in the infirmary:
“Hi Dad,” Romy said in English. He continued in Creole, telling his father that he had “a big headache” and that there was a guy who “hit me really hard” on the back of the neck.
Cause of Death
Roodwiny Exantus, Romy’s cousin, said there was no provocation for Thursday’s attack, which Romy reported to the school. Romy recounted that a teacher asked the boy why he hit Romy and he replied that he was paid $ 1 to hit him, Exantus said.
Romy was vomiting Thursday night, he was feeling too sick to go to school on Friday, and by 1 p.m., his condition worsened, Exantus said.“Then when I called the ambulance, when they came, he was talking. He was asking for water. He was like, ‘I beg you, give me some water,’ ”Exantus recalled. “That was his last moment, all he said was ‘water’. That was his last word.”
Exantus said that he wished the school would take Romy to the hospital after going to the infirmary.
The Department of Education said it was referring the situation to an “independent body” for investigation.
“This is a horrible tragedy and our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time. The safety of our youth is our top priority and this incident will be thoroughly investigated, and we are providing support to both the family and the school community, ”said DOE spokesperson Nathaniel Styer.
Osnel Gerson, 51, a nursing assistant who lives on the family’s ground floor, said Romy was quiet and polite.
“I feel so bad. They beat him at school. That’s wrong,” he said. “I think about what it could have done to them. I can’t think of anything. I’ve never seen this guy fight anyone. “
