Roger Janke, who allegedly threw stones at an Asian woman and her 6-year-old son in the Los Angeles area, was charged with a hate crime on Monday, April 5. The 28-year-old Fullerton man has been charged with throwing two stones at the woman’s vehicle while he was driving.
According to NBC News, the rocks cracked the windshield of the woman’s car. The Orange County District Attorney’s office also revealed that the car’s bumper was damaged during the incident. The district attorney’s office said the 38-year-old woman was driving a Tesla with her six-year-old son in the vehicle near Hughes Drive and Bastanchury Road in Fullerton when the incident occurred.
The statement also noted that the woman took the car to a nearby park and called the police. Janke told law enforcement that “the Koreans in the area were trying to control him.”
Speaking about the particular incident, District Attorney Todd Spitzer said hate crimes like this will not be “tolerated” in Orange County. The DA also noted that they are fully committed to cracking down on all those who are trying to spread hatred across the country.
Spitzer also promised to prosecute the case and other cases like it to send a stern message to all haters.
“A woman and her child should be able to drive down the street without worrying about being attacked because of her skin color. Our commitment to continue to prosecute hate crimes to the fullest extent of the law is sending a strong message to all haters: there is no place for hate here or anywhere else, “said District Attorney Todd Spitzer at the Press release.
Janke has been charged with a felony of civil rights violation, a felony of vandalism, a misdemeanor of throwing a substance into a vehicle, and a felony of hate crime.
If proven guilty, Janke would have to spend six years in state prison and six months in Orange County Jail. Lately, Janke has pleaded not guilty.
The 28-year-old Fullerton resident is currently being held on $ 51,500 bond. Despite calls from President Joe Biden, there has been an increase in attacks on Asian American communities. Recently, an elderly Asian-American woman fought a man who beat her on a San Francisco street.
Meanwhile, last month, a gunman named Robert Aaron Long killed four people and wounded another in different massage parlors on March 16. Six of the eight victims were Asian women, according to law enforcement authorities.
