Roberto Aguayo Wiki-Roberto Aguayo Biography
He was once considered a must-see prospect, as a kicker can get out of college, but things went pretty fast for Aguayo. The 26-year-old was selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Florida after a stellar career with the Seminoles.
Aguayo’s college career was fantastic. You could argue that he was the best kicker in college football history, though you’ll get a pushback from Louisiana fans who will remind you that Brett Baer is the most accurate to ever compete on the college playing field.
However, in three years at Tallahassee, Aguayo made 69 of 78 field goal attempts. That’s an 88.75% success rate, which is the fourth highest ever.
Unfortunately, Aguayo struggled early on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before losing his job to Folk during the offseason prior to the 2017 season. Aguayo bounced back after having chances with the Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Chargers, but He hasn’t kicked in the NFL since 2016. The Patriots are essentially giving him a chance to reinvigorate his career.
What Does This Signing Mean for Nick Folk?
Folk has had a close season to the Pro-Bowl.
At 36, he’s made a whopping 25 of 27 attempts, and that includes 2 of 3 from 50 yards or more. If it weren’t for the Baltimore Ravens ‘Justin Tucker, there’s a chance Folk would have joined the Patriots’ special teammates Matthew Slater and Jake Bailey on the AFC team.
Folk has beaten Aguayo before and has certainly built positive momentum with the based team this season. Assuming he finishes the last two games of the year strong, you’d have to think the Patriots would at least be open to him coming back in 2021.
However, Aguayo’s presence on the practice team would provide a bit of reassurance should Folk be off one year in 2021.
What Does This Signing Mean for Justin Rohrwasser?
The rookie should be the most concerned about the signing of Aguayo.
It seems unlikely the Patriots will have 2 kickers in their practice squad for long. At some point, a choice will be made in favor of one over the other.
Rohrwasser was selected in the fifth round of the draft in April, but has been unable to make the active roster after losing to Folk during training camp. The Patriots’ hiring of Aguayo is a bad sign that apparently would imply they don’t have much confidence that Rohrwasser will outperform Folk.
Don’t be surprised if Rohrwasser is trying to join another team next season, as the Patriots may have seen enough of him.
