Robert Durst Biography
Who is Robert Durst?
Robert Durst, the former heir to a New York real estate fortune and a longtime suspect in the disappearance of his ex-wife in Westchester County, has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his longtime friend, Susan Berman.
A Los Angeles jury returned the verdict Friday after more than three days of deliberation. Durst, 78, was not in the courtroom when the verdict was announced.
He faces life in prison.
Prosecutors argued Durst shot and killed
Prosecutors argued that Durst shot and killed his confidant Berman point-blank in 2000 to prevent him from telling police about a false alibi he provided after his wife, Kathie Durst, disappeared from Westchester County in 1982.
Berman allegedly made a suspicious phone call to Kathie’s college dean the night she was last seen, posing as the missing woman to tell the educator that she would be out sick the next day.
Although he was only tried for Berman’s murder, prosecutors argued that he killed Kathie and that she planned to flee the country after an incriminating HBO documentary aired about the alleged murders.
They also presented evidence from a trial in Texas, where he was acquitted of the murder of neighbor Morris Black after hiding in Galveston to avoid what he believed were imminent charges in connection with the suspected death of his wife.
In that case, Durst admitted to killing Black, but said he was in self-defense.
Arrest and Murder
Durst appeared to confess to the murders during the miniseries “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.”
“I killed them all, of course,” Durst was caught muttering to himself into a live microphone. The show also exposed him by lying about writing a note directing cops to Berman’s body.
He was arrested in 2015 in New Orleans the day before the final episode aired in 2015, wearing an elaborate head-to-shoulder prosthetic mask to conceal his identity, along with loads of cash, a gun, and a map of Cuba.
The trial began in the spring of last year, but he was held for 14 months due to the pandemic.

Robert Durst is a champion at fleeing responsibility, covering his tracks with lies so many could not clear them all, a prosecutor said Wednesday during closing arguments in the murder trial of the New York real estate heir.

Assistant District Attorney John Lewin argued to jurors that Durst was a privileged billionaire who had no problem killing people when he was cornered.
“Bob Durst is not crazy. He’s not some crazy serial killer who goes around killing for the thrill of doing it, “Lewin said.” Don’t let this narcissistic psychopath get away with it. ”
The defense argued that forensic evidence related to the case was lacking and that there was no evidence to show that he killed his wife. Kathie’s body was never found and charges were never filed in connection with her disappearance.
Her family said they are still “awaiting justice” in a statement after the verdict.
“Not a single day goes by without us thinking of our beautiful, intelligent and kind sister, Kathleen. Today, more than ever, it is clear that she was murdered by Robert Durst in Westchester County, New York, on January 31, 1982, “wrote family attorney Robert Abrams.
“The evidence is overwhelming. Although Durst has been rightly convicted of killing Susan Berman, who helped him hide the truth about Kathie’s death, the McCormack family is still awaiting justice. Kathie is still waiting for justice. “
