Richard Terrell is a Virginia man who suffered a rare reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine that caused a painful rash that spread all over his body, causing the skin to peel off, doctors said. Richard Terrell of Goochland, Virginia, told the news station that he began experiencing symptoms about four days after receiving the single-shot vaccine.
“I started getting a little discomfort in my armpit and then a few days later I started getting an itchy rash, and then I started to swell and my skin turned red,” Terrell told WRIC.
The rash proceeded to spread all over his body, causing his legs and arms to swell and his skin to peel off, he said. Insider has reached out to Johnson & Johnson for comment.
“It was stinging, burning and itching,” Terrell told WRIC. “Whenever I bent my arms or legs, like the inside of my knee, my inflamed skin hurt a lot and rubbing against itself.”
According to WRIC, the rash first prompted Terrell to visit a dermatologist, who told Terrell to go to the emergency room immediately. Terrell spent five days at VCU Medical Center, where the rash was treated and doctors biopsied the rash to see what caused it, WRIC reported.

One of Terrell’s dermatologist doctors at the hospital, Dr. Fnu Nutan, told WRIC that they determined that the vaccine had caused an “extremely rare” reaction. Nutan said doctors had ruled out the possibility of other viral infections, COVID-19 itself, and kidney and liver problems.
Nutan said he believed there was something in Terrell’s genetic makeup that caused him to react this way to the vaccine, according to WRIC.
Nutan told WRIC that Terrell’s experience should not prevent others from receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which the US Food and Drug Administration has said is safe and effective.
There have been no similar reports of serious reactions to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which was licensed for use in the US in late February.

“If you look at the risk of an adverse reaction to the vaccine, it is very, very low,” Nutan told WRIC. “We haven’t seen a big concern at all. I am a huge defender of the vaccine. ”
Terrell said he was still glad he got the vaccine.
“I wouldn’t hesitate to get it,” he told WRIC.
