Arrested and Charged
Gibbs’ husband, 26-year-old Chad Marek, was arrested and charged in connection with the former soccer star’s death.
The couple was married for less than a year.
Officers with the Lawrence Police Department pronounced Gibbs dead at the scene in what police are investigating as domestic violence.
Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart told Fox4KC that Marek called police saying he killed his wife, explaining that “God told him to do it.”
“He told us that God told him to do it,” Lockhart told the outlet.
Police said when they arrived at the couple’s apartment, Marek’s mental health raised concerns.
“There are obviously some preliminary indicators that this person was not mentally stable,” Lockhart added.
“We call it being in psychosis, so obviously that’s something we’ll be looking into as this case continues.”
The couple had been married less than a year after marrying last fall.
Gibbs was a goaltender for the Jayhawks football program from 2015 to 2018.
Jayhawks head football coach Mark Francis mourned the death of her former player, calling her a “terrific teammate and young woman.”
“Our soccer program is heartbroken to learn of the tragic loss of Regan. She was a tremendous teammate and young woman, and she touched many during her time in Kansas,” Francis said in a statement.
“Regan will always be remembered for the impact she had both on and off the field. We share our condolences to her family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
KU Athletics Director Travis Goff said, “We are devastated to learn of the loss of former KU student and athlete Regan Gibbs.
“Our KU family sends our love, support and prayers to Regan’s family, friends and former teammates as we all mourn her loss.”
Gibbs’ family has set up a GoFundMe, calling the former football star a “beautiful, kind-hearted girl who loved Jesus.”
“Regan was just 25 years old, a beautiful, good-hearted girl who loved Jesus and people. She had a big heart for the homeless and hoped to go back to school to become a medical assistant to do missionary work.
“Regan had a precious soul and was loved by all who knew her. She leaves behind her mother and four younger sisters who are heartbroken by this tragic loss,” the family wrote.
