Rebekah Jones Wiki
Rebekah Jones Biography
Rebekah Jones is an American data scientist, geographer, and whistleblower specializing in geographic information systems (GIS) data science for tracking hurricanes, epidemiology, and climatology. In September 2018, she became a GIS Analyst at the Florida Department of Health in Tallahassee. From November 2019 to May 2020, Jones was the geographic information science manager for the Florida Department of Health, where he created a geospatial presentation for Hurricane Michael. She was also involved in monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic in Florida.
Rebekah Jones was the team manager for the Florida Department of Health Geographic Information System and had helped create the COVID-19 statistics dashboard for the state, NPR reported. In an email in May, Jones told subscribers that she and her office would no longer be managing the board, as she had been removed from that position.
Jones told CBS 12 that she was fired because she would not “manually change the data to get support for the plan to reopen.” She said that after she refused to censor the data, she was removed. Jones had objected to removing records listing symptoms or positive test results before they were officially announced, the Tampa Bay Times reported after reviewing internal emails.
In an email to her supervisor the day after she wrote the COVID-19 subscriber list, Jones said some of her comments had been misinterpreted, the Tampa Bay Times reported. She also told the Sun-Sentinel that she was surprised at how controversial her email had been. She said that when she sent the bulk email, she was tired and had been working long hours.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis rebutted Jones’ allegations at a news conference in May. DeSantis said, in part: “She is not the main architect of our web portal, that is another false statement … She was putting data on the portal that the scientists did not believe was valid data.” So she didn’t listen to the people who were her superiors … and she was fired for that and a lot of different reasons … ”
Helen Aguirre Ferre, DeSantis communications director, told the Miami Herald: “Rebekah Jones exhibited a repeated course of insubordination during her time with the department, including her one-sided decisions to modify the department’s COVID-19 dashboard.”
Jones eventually created her own Florida COVID Action website, which you can view here. She tweeted about the website after sharing video of police raiding her home.
She launched the website in June, CNN reported, funded by donations. She presented her data alongside DOH’s for comparison, CNN reported.
Jones was also a graduate student in the Florida State University Department of Geography from 2016 to 2018, where he completed course work with an emphasis on data science and was working on a doctoral thesis titled “Using Landscapes from Native American Sites to extend the paleotempestological record of North America through coupled remote sensing and climatological analysis ”. According to Jones, her PhD work is in progress.
