Who is Ray Tate?

A Kentucky man charged with first-degree murder is charged with kidnapping two people, killing an Illinois police officer, and a series of auto thefts and robberies.

Ray Tate, 40, of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was located Wednesday after a crime spree in Illinois and Missouri.

He was arrested around 2 p.m. and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Illinois Police Deputy Sean Riley around 5 a.m. of that morning.

Riley responded to a call for motorist assistance on Interstate 64 near Mill Shoals, Illinois, around 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to a Facebook post from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

When a second officer arrived at the scene, he found Riley dead. The sheriff’s squad car was missing, but was later found abandoned near I-64 east. The exact location was not disclosed. It is unclear if Tate stole the police car.

Police began tracking Tate, first to St. Peters, Missouri, after he was suspected of robbing a truck two hours after Riley was shot. The semi-driver was taken hostage, Illinois State Police said in a statement.

Around 7 a.m., the driver and Tate arrived at a QuikTrip in St. Peters, Missouri, police said, where Tate shot and abducted another man.

The man, who was not identified by police, was shot in the shoulder and his white Nissan Titan stolen. He was later found abandoned off Highway 70 near O’Fallon.

He was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Shooting

He shot the victim around 7 a.m., two hours after he reportedly fatally shot an Illinois police officer, Sean Riley, on I-64 near Mills Shoals, Illinois.

“While he was in Missouri, a series of auto break-ins, robberies and shootings occurred,” the Illinois State Police said in a statement.

St. Peters police said that after he abandoned the car near Interstate 70, Tate stole a white pickup, police said.

He drove to a home in Carlyle, Illinois, and broke in, taking the homeowner and the semiconductor hostage, police said.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office warned Carlyle residents about two men “considered armed and dangerous” because they weren’t sure if the landlord was involved.

Charged

Illinois State Police said the owner and semiconductor hostages were found there unharmed.

Tate was booked into the Clinton County Jail and charged with first degree murder by the Wayne County State Attorney.

He recently ended his probation, which ended on December 21, after being in and out of prison in Kentucky for promoting smuggling, various counts of senseless endangerment, illegal possession of methamphetamine precursors, and fleeing or evading the police.

He was released at the end of April.

The agent’s body was taken to a Vanderburgh County, Indiana, morgue and escorted back to Illinois on Wednesday, an Indiana state police confirmed to DailyMail.com on Wednesday.
