Arrested and Charged
A former University of Miami soccer player was arrested for the murder of his teammate Bryan Pata nearly 15 years ago.
Rashaun Jones of Lake City was arrested with the help of U.S. marshals, the Miami-Dade County Police Department announced Thursday afternoon.
Jones, 35, was a former defensive back for the Hurricanes.
Jones was a likely suspect, but no charges had been filed until Thursday.
Police say it was a calculated murder.
Pata, a promising defensive lineman, was shot and killed execution-style on Nov. 7, 2006, in the parking lot of his apartment complex in Kendall after he returned home from practice. He was 22.
Pata, who stood 6 feet 4 and weighed 280 pounds, was remembered as a gentle giant with a big smile.
“We believe this person was waiting for Bryan Pata. We do not know exactly where this person was located, but there are trees, shrubs and concrete walls in the vicinity,” the Miami-Dade police detective said. Miguel Domínguez said in a 2017 story with NBC 6 reporter Laura Rodríguez.
“His girlfriend at the time was inside the apartment. She thought she heard her voice and when she left, Bryan Pata was discovered dead,” Domínguez said.
Pata, the youngest of nine siblings raised by a single mother, had the potential to rise to stardom in the NFL first in high school and then in Coral Gables. After finishing his prep career at Miami Central High School, the defensive lineman chose the ‘Batons over schools like Florida and Oklahoma.
He had 13 tackles and two sacks in his senior season and was on a watch list for the award as the best defensive end in the nation. His family believed that the motive for his murder was clear.
“I wanted to get to the NFL and make my mother proud and I wanted to help her family,” brother Edrick Pata told NBC 6 in 2017. “I think it was more jealousy, a lot of jealousy. The way Bryan behaved, it was He was very bold, he was confident in what he was doing, he was confident that he would graduate from college, he was confident that he would be drafted into the NFL. “
