Stuart MacGill arrested – accused

Former Australian cricketer Stuart MacGill was kidnapped and released in an alleged kidnapping in Sydney last month, police say. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident that took place on April 14.

Police said MacGill knew one of the men and that the plot was financially motivated. He suffered minor injuries in the incident but did not require medical attention, police said. MacGill, 50, was a test driver for the national team from 1998 to 2008.

At one point, he was ranked as the second best bowler in the world behind his teammate, Shane Warne.

Dragged into a car and mugged

New South Wales police said the arrests, which took place after raids were carried out in Sydney on Wednesday, were the result of a two-week investigation. Police allege that MacGill had been approached and confronted in the Sydney suburb of Cremorne one night by a 46-year-old man he knew.

Then two other men appeared and the group forced the former cricketer into a car.

They took him to a remote location in Bringelly, on the outskirts of the city, where he was allegedly assaulted and threatened at gunpoint by the “criminal gang,” police said. After about an hour, he was taken to the southwestern suburb of Belmore and released, police said.

Authorities said that he did not turn himself in or obtain money in the course of the attack, but the kidnapping attempt was financially motivated. Police said MacGill reported the crime to authorities a week after it occurred, and that he was concerned for his and his family’s safety.”Standing on a street, being dragged into a car, driven into a remote location, physically assaulted, threatened with a firearm, held for a period of time, and then thrown, I think I’d be pretty concerned,” Detective Anthony said. Holton.

“I know it was only an hour that he was detained, but it would have been a horribly frightening hour to endure,” he added.

He said MacGill’s ordeal was “not involved in any backstory that led to him owning a personal debt to other people” and that he was being treated solely as a “targeted kidnapping victim.” Police said the arrested group members, aged 27, 29, 42 and 46, would be charged later Wednesday.

Australian media reported that MacGill, who retired from cricket in 2008, works as the general manager of a restaurant in Sydney’s northern suburbs. MacGill has yet to provide public comment on the incident.
