Who is Raad Jiyad ?

A motorist who tried to save a woman from a knife maniac by driving at him turned to a witness and said ‘what have I done?’ after both victim and attacker were left dead.

The hero driver was arrested on suspicion of murder last night after children and parents on the school run witnessed the horrific double killing.

Bystanders had tried to stop the man he stabbed after he lunged at his 43-year-old victim and stabbed her more than ten times. But the savage attack was only stopped when the passing motorist struck the 41-year-old attacker on the pavement. He also beat the female victim.

Video footage obtained by the Daily Mail shows paramedics and police fighting to save the attacker and the woman. They both died on the spot.

A man who claimed to have seen the attack in Maida Vale, northwest London, said: “The driver said ‘what have I done?’ I told him ‘you had to do that’.’

The man, who did not want to give his name, added: ‘The driver had them both under his car, the boy and the girl.

‘Me and two geezers had to lift the car and get the body out of it. We were giving him CPR but he had stab wounds everywhere. We couldn’t stop the blood.

Raad Jiyad, who also witnessed the bloodbath, said: “I woke up to take my son to school and I heard a noise, someone saying: ‘Please help me, please help me’.”

‘I opened the door and saw a girl on the street on the floor and a guy with a knife.’

The 52-year-old father of two ran off to try to distract the attacker who he said was brandishing a 4-inch kitchen knife. Another bystander who tried to intervene was chased away by the slasher.

Jiyad said the man sat on top of her victim, yelling “take it” and “nobody come at me” as he repeatedly stabbed her.

“I heard her scream in pain,” he added. ‘I wanted to try to get him to come to me instead of buying him some time. We try to save her. She had a big knife so no one wanted to get close. Then he passed this car and hit it. It all ended so quickly. He sank completely under the car.

“I think the driver was just trying to buy time to distract him.”

Witnesses said the attacker was trapped under the vehicle and the woman was also beaten, with her coat caught under a wheel.

Jiyad said the driver’s actions were heroic, describing how he himself tried to save the woman: “I tried to talk to her while she was bleeding and held her while she took her last breath.” I have blood on my hand for that.’

His wife, who asked not to be named, added: “The driver was not driving very fast, but nothing could separate the man from the lady.” The driver was the only one who could do anything.

Another witness, Mulugeta Asseratte, said: “I was walking up Chippenham Road from the bakery and all of a sudden I heard shouts of ‘stop, stop’ and she was a girl being attacked by a gentleman.”

“She all of a sudden she moved into the street and as soon as they got to the street a driver came and hit them both. We were all shocked and screaming.

Police arrived within minutes and were seen leading the driver into the back of a police van.

Officers said a 26-year-old man was being questioned on suspicion of murder. Detective Chief Inspector Jim Eastwood said: “This was a horrific incident that occurred in broad daylight on a busy London street. It also appears that several members of the public valiantly tried to intervene to stop the attack.

‘A man has been arrested in connection with the case; We are not aware of any link between this man and the two deceased.

“I can also confirm that we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.” The attacker and the victim are believed to have known each other.

Police said the families of the man and woman who died have been informed and post-mortem examinations will be arranged in due course.

In a statement, the force said: “Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, but at this early stage it is believed that the two deceased knew each other.”

Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Neil Smithson said earlier

Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Neil Smithson said earlier: “An incredibly serious incident has unfolded in the Westminster area this morning in which two people have been pronounced dead.” Our officers are on scene and are working to establish exactly what happened. As soon as we have more information, we will keep the public updated, but for now we must avoid speculation and allow the researchers to do their job.

“What I can say at this point is that the incident is contained and we do not believe there is a major threat to the community. We have already spoken to several people, but anyone else who witnessed the incident or has information that could help us is urged to get in touch immediately.
