A fugitive MIT student wanted in the February murder of a Yale graduate student in Connecticut was arrested by US marshals in Alabama on Friday, ending an intense four-month manhunt.

An international arrest warrant had been issued for 29-year-old Qinxuan Pan on murder and larceny charges in connection with the murder of Kevin Jiang on a New Haven street on February 6.

Marshals, who previously offered $ 10,000 for Pan’s capture, said a task force of fugitives from the Gulf Coast and Montgomery police arrested the suspect Friday morning. Details of the arrest were not immediately released.

Killing

A fugitive wanted in the February murder of a Yale graduate student in Connecticut was arrested in Alabama on Friday, the U.S. Marshals Service said. An international arrest warrant had been issued for Qinxuan Pan on murder and theft charges in connection with the murder of Kevin Jiang on a New Haven street on February 6.

Marshals offered a $ 10,000 reward for information leading to Pan’s arrest.

It was not immediately clear if Pan has a lawyer who can answer the allegations.

Victim

Jiang was a graduate student at Yale School of the Environment and an army veteran from Washington state who had recently gotten engaged to marry his one-year MIT graduate girlfriend, Zion Perry.

The New Haven Independent previously reported that Pan had crossed paths with Jiang’s fiancee while the two were attending MIT.

Pan, a Chinese-born computer science researcher at MIT, was seen in the days after Jiang’s murder driving in suburban Atlanta with family members and acting strangely.

The photos showed Pan and Perry interacting at the Lindy Hop Society’s Bread & Bones Birthday Jam celebration on March 4, 2020.

One of the photos from the event shows the two smiling widely as they chat with another man, but so far no evidence has been presented to suggest that Pan and Perry had dated.

Pan, a graduate of MIT, is an American citizen who was born in Shanghai, China. His last known address was Malden, Massachusetts.

According to his Facebook page, which has been inactive since 2016, Pan worked as a researcher in computer science and artificial intelligence at MIT, where Perry, Jiang’s fiancée, was an undergraduate student.

Pan graduated from MIT with undergraduate degrees in computer science and mathematics in June 2014 and entered the prestigious school’s graduate program two months later.

Perry earned a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering from MIT in 2016.

Sheriffs allege that Pan stole an SUV from a dealership in Mansfield, Massachusetts, on the day of the murder before driving to Connecticut.

Jiang was found thrown out of his Prius and sustaining gunshot wounds around 8:30 a.m. on February 6 near the intersection of Lawrence and Nicoll streets in the East Rock neighborhood, police said.

Arrested and Charged

The 26-year veteran earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Washington before beginning his graduate studies at Yale in 2019. He was a member of the 2022 class.

In the days after the murder, authorities said Pan was seen in suburban Atlanta driving with family and acting strangely.

Last month, Interpol issued a ‘red notice’ on Pan asking member countries to arrest him on murder and theft charges.
