Penton was blocking traffic, standing outside his patrol car with his hazard lights on, when his police vehicle struck him.
He was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas, with patrols escorting the ambulance, but then Penton was pronounced dead. Officer Penton joined the department in February 2019 and was assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division. The department said Penton had just completed the training and became a full-fledged officer in October.
“We have a department that is in mourning. We have a family that is grieving, ”Chief García said Saturday morning.
Officers lined up outside the hospital to greet Penton as they removed him and took him to the medical examiner. Police said slippery and icy roads were not a factor in the accident, and the road reopened Saturday morning.

Penton was hired in February 2019 and assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division, according to the police department.
“Our hearts are heavy right now,” said Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia. “This young officer had a bright future ahead of him. We asked the community to join us as we prayed [for] the officer’s family. We would also like to extend that prayer to the brave men and women of this great department. ”

He had also been a member of the men’s varsity soccer team and began his college career in the sport in 2011.

Today I pray for his family, friends and colleagues. I know our city will give them love and support as we seek justice. ”
