Who was Peter Scolari ?

Actor Peter Scolari died Friday morning at the age of 66 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Emmy-winning actor Peter Scolari, who co-starred with Tom Hanks in the ABC sitcom “Bosom Buddies,” died at age 66 on Friday, according to his manager, Ellen Lubin Sanitsky, at Wright Entertainment. He had battled cancer for two years.

Scolari was also known for his role on the CBS sitcom “Newhart,” starring Bob Newhart as a Vermont innkeeper and aired from 1982 to 1990, and an Emmy-winning guest role on HBO’s “Girls,” in which he played the father of Hannah Horvath, the main character played by creator Lena Dunham.

“Bosom” proved to be the lead role for both Scolari and Hanks (who remained lifelong friends, according to Deadline), but ran for only two seasons, from 1980 to 1982.

Scolari played the sympathetic and shy Henry with the boisterous and sarcastic Kip in Hanks, two young professionals from New York who dressed as transvestites to live in an affordable hotel for women. His characters also posed as the siblings of his alter egos Buffy (Hanks) and Hildegard (Scolari).

Harvey Fierstein added: “It is sad to see the news that Peter Scolari lost his battle with cancer. There was no sweeter man on the planet. We performed together on HAIRSPRAY for a while and he was always a total delight. Goodbye dear Peter . “
