An 18-year-old college student who fell dead from a mountain range was an experienced climber who “died doing what he loved.”
Peter Garlick fell while climbing Mount Ngungun, the sixth highest peak in the Glass House Mountains in the interior of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, on Saturday.
Several traumatized bystanders saw him fall about 40 meters off the cliff around noon, sustaining fatal injuries in the fall.
Mr. Garlick was studying teaching at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and was a well-loved and respected member of the school’s rock climbing club, the QUT Cliffhangers.

A young man who died while rock climbing Saturday in the Glasshouse Mountains on the Sunshine Coast has been remembered for his effervescent and cheerful personality.

A rescue helicopter was dispatched and paramedics treated Mr. Garlick for critical injuries after he fell 40 meters, however he died at the scene.
Garlick, who graduated from Northside Christian College in 2019, was studying teaching at QUT.
Northside Christian College wrote on Facebook Sunday that Mr. Garlick “will always be remembered for his effervescent and cheerful personality” of him.
“Peter, an avid and experienced climber, was doing what he loved,” they wrote. They urged their followers and friends to pray for Garlick and his family.
His former high school, Northside Christian College, described Garlick as “effervescent and joyous” in its tribute to deceased alumni.
“The Garlick family has been an integral part of Northside Christian College for many years, and we cry with them today.”
“He will always be remembered for his effervescent and joyous personality, as well as being a truly kind and humble follower of Jesus.”

Sunshine Coast Sergeant Major Jimmy Driver said it was a “heartbreaking” incident witnessed by others.
He said the coordinator of a nearby rock climbing group provided Garlick with first aid before paramedics arrived.
This afternoon, the mountain was very crowded. It was a heartbreaking event, ” the officer told The Courier Mail.
“People were shocked and traumatized by the incident that happened in full view of several people.”
Martin Worth, who has been climbing for more than three decades and was on Mount Ngungun on Saturday morning, said that while he did not witness the incident, the teenager was an experienced climber.
Mt Ngungun was closed for the afternoon while emergency services worked to recover the body.
