Yesterday, the trial heard details of a chilling 999 call in which Jackson told operators that she tried to stab her husband in the heart of her, but “he doesn’t have one.”
It resumed today with prosecutors who revealed Jackson’s delight when they told him that her actions at her home on February 13 of this year had led to her death.
The prosecution, Christopher Quinlan QC, said he was told the prosecution had been upgraded to murder when he arrived at the police station.wikipedia
He said she replied, ‘Oh murder, not attempted murder? Oh God.’
Jackson later told police: ‘It took a long time to arrive. Glad to hear it. If I had the chance again, I would do it again even if I was locked up for 125 million years.
How old is Penelope Jackson ?
She is 66 year old.
I should have left years ago, but I didn’t.
“I deserve everything that comes my way, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.”
Jackson was later detained by police officers who noticed several injuries to both arms and a small cut on her finger, and the next day she was interviewed under caution.
At trial, it was heard that she had refused to answer questions, but provided a statement.
She told police that she had been the victim of ‘extreme violence’ following the death of her 28-year-old son Gavin, who committed suicide in 1998.
She later referred to an incident in December 2020 when she called the police and locked her husband in the greenhouse to protect himself from her before he broke through and assaulted her.
Referring to the night of February 13 this year, she said they had enjoyed a zoom call with her daughter and her son-in-law where they ate crab and lobster.
But she told police: ‘Her face changed to something she had seen so many times. She knew there would be trouble at the end of the call. ‘
She said that she went to bed fearing that he would become aggressive with a knife under her pillow.
“I felt like I couldn’t do this anymore and tried to kill myself by cutting my wrist,” she added. “I told David that he had had enough and that he couldn’t go on.”
She said that Mr. Jackson ‘prompted’ her to use the knife.
She added: ‘I didn’t mean to kill him or seriously harm him, but I stabbed him once with a knife. I got up, went and went to the kitchen.
The £300,000 cul-de-sac bungalow was home to the Jackson’s, who had been married for 24 years before wife Penelope
I put down the knife and said ‘now you know what it feels like’. Then she came to me, but what happened next is unclear. ”
Jackson said he must have picked up the knife again, since David had two more stabs and he fell to the ground.
Referring to the following call to 999 that the jury was heard in its entirety earlier in the trial, he added: ‘I was told that I made several comments to the police, but I was in complete shock and traumatized by what happened. He didn’t mean to kill him, he just wanted him to stop. I wanted David to know that the years of abuse had to end. ‘
Quinlan told jury that when police conducted a search of the scene, they discovered what she described as a “confession note.”
The note read: ‘I have received so much abuse over the years.’
She wrote that he had been a ‘good daddy’ while he was in Germany, ‘but she added:’ However, the mask slipped off tonight.
She signed the note writing: ‘I accept my punishment, rot in hell.’
Quinlan said it was clear that the note had been written prior to the 999 call when police arrived during that period.
The defendant had worked in administration and accounts in the Royal Air Force and later in the army, where he met the victim who had been promoted from private to lieutenant colonel.
Before settling in Somerset, the couple had lived in Germany and France and were described by friends as “happy together”.
One friend told police that their relationship “was nothing out of the ordinary,” while another said: “From time to time they disagreed and argued and argued, but it never lasted long.”
