Ritter, who passed away at home with his wife Polly and their children Frank and Noah at their bedside, was best known to thousands of viewers as the affable father Martin Goodman on the Channel 4 sitcom, opposite Tamsin Greig, Simon Bird. and Tom. Rosenthal.
His chilling turn in the HBO drama Chernobyl saw him as one of the villains of the Ukrainian disaster, deputy chief engineer Anatoly Dyatlov, a world away from the merry patriarch.

Veteran actor Eddie Marsan called him “one of our best actors,” while Rob Delaney said one of his recent roles made him think “we have a new movie star.”

He broke down when he told the BBC’s Nihal Arthanayake on Radio 5 Live: “No one has had a bad word to say about him. He was the best actor I have ever worked with.
“But he was down to earth. This is a horrible and very sad day. ”

Mr. Ritter was born on March 5, 1966 and was as prolific on stage as he was on screen.
From 2005 to 2006 he played Otis Gardiner in the Royal National Theater’s original production of Helen Edmundson’s Coram Boy.
