Paul Gladney (August 4, 1941 – May 19, 2021), better known by the stage name Paul Mooney, was an American comedian, writer, social critic, and actor, best known as the writer of comedian Richard Pryor, portraying singer Sam Cooke in The Buddy Holly Story (1978), Junebug in Bamboozled (2000) and his appearances on Chappelle’s Show.
Comedian and actor Paul Mooney, who collaborated with comedic stars including Richard Pryor and Dave Chappelle, has died from a heart attack, his publicist Cassandra Williams confirmed to CBS News on Wednesday. He was 79.
Mooney was born in 1941 in Shreveport, Louisiana, and seven years later moved to Oakland, California. His parents were George Gladney and LaVoya Ealy. Mooney was raised by his grandmother Aimay Ealy, known as “Mother” in the family. Gladney coined the nickname “Mooney” in honor of the original Scarface (1932) actor Paul Muni.

Allegation of child sexual abuse
In an August 2019 interview with Comedy Hype, Richard Pryor’s former bodyguard, Rashon Khan, alleged that Mooney had sexually abused Pryor’s son, Richard Pryor Jr., when Pryor Jr. was a child. Khan also alleged that Pryor had expressed his wish that Mooney be killed in a murder-for-hire plot over this incident and only prevented from doing so in his 1980 arson accident . The allegations have been substantiated by Richard Pryor Sr.’s widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor. Richard Pryor Jr. has confirmed that he was raped, but did not mention Mooney by his name.

Mooney began his career in comic book jobs as a circus manager and then went on to write and work with comedy superstars.
His wise and sharp thoughts on racism and American life made him a respected figure.
Mooney was the author of some of Pryor’s biggest comedy hits, including “Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip” and “The Richard Pryor Show.” His friendship and collaboration with Pryor began in 1968 and lasted until Pryor’s death in 2005. Together they faced racism perhaps more directly than on stage before. Mooney spoke about his association in her 2007 memoir “Black Is the New White.”
He also wrote for the 1970s sitcom “Sanford and Son,” starring Redd Fox, and for the Fox comedy sketch show “In Living Color,” which became the mind behind the famous Homey character. D.
