TRIBUTES ARRIVE for Michelin star chef Paul Kitching, who died suddenly at the age of 61.
Kitching ran the five-star restaurant 21212 in Edinburgh with his heartbroken partner Katie O’Brien.
O’Brien broke the news yesterday in a social media post that read: “Sorry to say the love of my life is gone.”
Katie said: “Dear friends, it is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that I have lost my love, Paul, who sadly passed away yesterday.
“The death has been a complete shock to us at 21212 and we are trying to come to terms with the passing of a legend within our industry. Paul was an inspirational figure to all who ever had the pleasure of knowing or working with him and everyone. we are devastated.”
Top stars in the food industry have paid tribute to Kitching, who has been hailed as a “true inspiration”.
His fellow chef Dean Banks, of the Pompadour on Princes Street Waldorf Astoria, said Kitching will “live on” through his food and what he taught younger cooks.
In a moving post on Instagram, he wrote: “A true inspiration to thousands of chefs who have walked through her doors and many more.
“Paul taught me that there are no rules in the kitchen. Lemon Pie with Chicken, STP with Venison are a few that I mention a lot.
“Paul will live through cooking and teaching him.
Paul was my last head chef before I went out on my own and he really was a part of creating me and my style.
“My condolences to everyone who loved him and everyone who looks up to him as one of the greats. He will be greatly missed.”
The Michelin Guide also called him “a real maverick” in the industry in a post on Twitter.
The guide, which inspects hotels and restaurants around the world, wrote: “Paul Kitching was kind, intelligent, enormously talented and infectiously enthusiastic.
“He was also a true maverick and his passion and creativity were evident in every dish he created.
“Our sincere condolences go out to Katie and her entire family.”
Michelin star chef Simon Rogan also said: “It is incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Paul Kitching, a great man and great talent.
“There was no one like him. I will never forget the craziest but most memorable meals.
“A true inspiration to me. My thoughts are with Katie and the @21212Edinburgh team.”
Fans have also posted tributes to Kitching online, with many sharing touching memories of the greatest chef.
One person said: “He was an extraordinary talent and a beautiful human being. I have a letter from him that I will always treasure. I will be thinking of you two in the days to come.”
Another added: “Extremely sad and shocked to hear. He always brought his ‘A’ game to the industry. We have lost a great chef and man. May he rest in peace. Condolences to his entire team and especially his close friends and family.” . right now.”
Someone else wrote: “Oh so sorry to hear this. What a great culinary talent Paul was. Sending condolences and love.”
While a fourth posted: “Our deepest condolences. A great chef and an incredible man! I had the pleasure of meeting him on numerous occasions. All our love.”
And a fifth chimed in: “An absolute legend, artist and creator. Full of personality and conversation. Hugely intelligent. The kind of person you meet once and has a lasting impression on you. So privileged to have met him. Thinking of all of you. . Rest in peace”.
Kitching opened 21212 with O’Brien at Edinburgh’s Royal Terrace in 2009 and has won numerous awards.
