Who was Patryk Milner?

Patryk Milner from Sandbach, Cheshire, fell ill around 9:50am. m. on September 30, 2020, as he finished his first lesson of the day at Offley Primary Academy.

Patryk Milner, 7, sadly died after collapsing at school in September 2020

The healthy and fit schoolboy of him tragically suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in front of his classmates.

His teacher David Ellis, who was on his first day at school, administered CPR with the help of other staff members before 999 was called and paramedics arrived.

The youngster was airlifted to Leighton Hospital in Crewe before being transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

Arrest

Doctors managed to restart his circulation, but after being in cardiac arrest for 40 minutes, the damage to his brain was deemed too severe.

Sadly, the schoolboy passed away at Alder Hey on October 2, 2020, just 36 hours after being transferred.

Cheshire Chief Coroner Alan Moore gave a conclusion of natural causes, with a medical cause of death being sudden cardiac arrhythmia that had not been diagnosed, during an inquest at Warrington Coroner’s Court on Tuesday.

Patryk’s devastated parents told the inquest in a statement that his son was a “fit and healthy boy” who loved sports and had no known persistent underlying conditions.

Investigation

He was a member of the Sandbach RUFC under-8 team and his parents, Andy and Aggie, are well-known figures in club rugby.

Mama Aggie said that she had been suffering from a sore throat on September 20, which she was diagnosed as having a “viral infection” and did not require medication.

As of September 30, the 7-year-old boy still had a sore throat, but no other symptoms or problems, so he was able to attend school.

Aggie explained, “When I dropped him off at school, he seemed fine and there
I saw nothing in his behavior that would give me reason to think otherwise.”

“Andrew and I are totally devastated by the unexpected and sudden loss of our son. No parent expects to be in this position.”

Patryk’s GP, Dr. Priyan Gunawardena, also confirmed that Patryk had been diagnosed with a mild form of laryngitis, but also described him as a “fit and healthy boy” with no other issues to worry about.

Detailing what happened in the classroom, Ellis told the investigation: “We had just finished the first lesson and I asked the children to pack up.

At this point, Patryk was probably in the second row of the classroom. He leaned across the desk and extended his arm to her.

“I thought he was trying to get my attention because of his sore throat. I asked him if he needed help, but he didn’t answer,” he said.

“He still had his arm out in front of him. I noticed he was shaking. I asked him repeatedly if he was okay, but he didn’t answer.”

“I walked over to him and I was worried he was about to pass out. I pulled him off the desk, off the chair and onto the floor. I put my hand on his chest and felt his heart pound.”

Ellis asked some students to come to the office to tell them that he “needed immediate assistance” while he put Patryk in the recovery position.

Other staff members soon arrived to help with CPR, while the school’s automated external defibrillator (AED) was brought in and hooked up to Patryk.

But when the device analyzed his heart, he said a shock was not needed and to continue CPR, which continued until paramedics arrived shortly after 10 a.m.

Statement

In a statement read out at the inquest, Dr. Nayan Shetty, of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, said Patryk is believed to have experienced “loss of cardiac output” for around 40 minutes.

She described Patryk as “unresponsive” with scans showing he had suffered severe brain edema.

The schoolboy sadly died as a result of her brain injuries on October 2.

Dr. Michael Bowes, a consultant pediatric electrophysiologist who specializes in heart conditions in children, suggested that it was “more likely than not” that Patryk died as a result of an undiagnosed cardiac arrhythmia.

He described it as a “horrible furtive condition” as they often do not exhibit any obvious signs or symptoms before death.

After recording his conclusion of natural causes, Mr. Moore paid tribute to Patryk and praised his loved ones for allowing his organ donation.

His father, Andrew, had previously said poignantly that he had given three children “the gift of life”.
