Patrick Moccia was an American teacher from New Jersey who is believed to have committed suicide inside the high school where he worked, authorities said Saturday. He was found dead inside Pompton Lakes High School shortly after 9 p.m.

Moccia is survived by his wife, two sons and two stepchildren, according to Superintendent Paul Amoroso in a letter to the school community.
Cause of death
Moccia was found dead inside Pompton Lakes High School. An autopsy will determine the official cause, but Moccia’s death “is believed to be the result of an apparent suicide,” Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Pompton Lakes Police Chief Derek Clark said. in a joint statement.

Moccia was listed on the school’s website as an advisor to the school’s fall play.
“My heart goes out to Patrick Moccia’s family, please keep them in his thoughts during this difficult time,” Council Member Jennifer Polidori wrote on Facebook. “This is a sad and tragic loss for our community.”
“We ask that you keep Mr. Moccia and his family in his thoughts and prayers,” Amoroso said.
The New Jersey Office of the Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy at a later date and an investigation is active and ongoing, according to Valdes and Clark.
It is not known if anyone else was in the building at the time. In accordance with the district’s hybrid learning schedule, in-person learning at the high school ends at 11:30 a.m. and virtual instruction learning takes place starting at 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
The district will provide on-site counseling support for students on Sunday from 10 a.m. at 2 p.m. at the high school’s media center, which is located at 44 Lakeside Ave. Social distancing guidelines will be enforced and students must wear face covers, Amoroso said.
The district will also provide ongoing in-person and virtual counseling to students.
