Owen G Ray was charged after he was charged with beating his wife, Kristen, on Sunday, December 27, at their home at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. His two youngest sons witnessed his alleged crime and the oldest called the police. Ray was armed with a shotgun and two pistols when authorities arrived at his home and reportedly warned that if someone tried to arrest him, he would kill them and himself, according to Military.com.
According to an official Army website, Ray has had command at all levels within the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), which deploys missions throughout the Indo-Pacific. In 2011, he served as a detachment commander in 2003 and as a company commander in Afghanistan. In 2013, Ray commanded the 4th Battalion, 1st SFG (A) and was deployed as part of the Joint Special Operations Task Force before assuming the position of I Corps chief of staff at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Ray released his wife and children around 12:30 a.m. but didn’t turn himself in until 2.30 a.m., police say. First, his wife left the house with their younger children, followed by their eldest daughter. “You could hear Ray saying that the police had surrounded the house, so what choice did she have now and? You are going to force me to commit suicide, ”according to the affidavit.
He also reportedly told officers by phone that he would shoot officers who tried to arrest him and him. “He said that he had killed many people and that he had no problem killing law enforcement officials if they tried to arrest him,” according to the affidavit, seen by Military.com.

Charged and arrested
At 2:22 a.m., he finally surrendered and was arrested by officers from the Lakewood Police Department. The affidavit noted that the incident began after Ray and his wife, Kristin, argued, in which she accused her husband of being drunk. As the argument grew increasingly violent, Kristen freaked out and hid in her seven and ten-year-old son’s bedroom.
Ray was charged with one count of first degree kidnapping, two counts of second degree assault, one count of serious stalking, and one count of reckless endangering. He is currently being held in the Pierce County Jail on a $ 1 million cash bond. His bail hearing is scheduled for January 4 and he was ordered to appear in court again on January 11 with his attorney.
Kristen told police that she heard her husband say, “Let’s do this,” after which he went to the garage to retrieve his firearms. Ray allegedly began “yelling and brandishing the gun” after finding his wife and children. At one point, Kristin threatened to call the police, which infuriated him. He pointed one of the guns at Kristen, threatening to kill her in front of the children, Military.com reported. Ray then allegedly kicked his wife repeatedly in the face and chest as the younger children screamed, “Don’t kill Mom! Don’t shoot us!”
Ray’s 16-year-old daughter finally got a chance to dial 911 and told dispatchers what was happening. Children could be heard screaming during the 911 call.
Joint Base Lewis-McChord told Military.com that Ray has been suspended from his job as I Corps chief of staff.
