A close up of the killer
Osmond Roy Greig was sentenced to life in prison for the stabbing murder of Daryl Corcoran.
“I feel like the whole situation took my life and I’m not the same person I was,” he said.
“I have endured the loss of friendships and [they] are uncomfortable with me because they don’t know what to say.
“It feels like I was scarred by what he did.”
The woman also criticized the media for publishing photos and going to her house and her business to try to interview her.
The victim’s daughter, who was 20 years old when her father was killed, told the court that she had struggled with homelessness and addiction since her death.
“I miss my dad so much, I feel like I’ll never be home again,” she said.
“I lost my way of life in the years after you murdered my father and I just floated aimlessly on the tide.
“I will always have a cloud above me. It varies in size and level of darkness, but it is always there.”
Mr. Corcoran’s sister said that “my world fell apart and my life changed forever” when her brother was killed.
She said that social media alerted her to the crime that was unfolding.
“I saw the defendant’s Facebook post that said, ‘Rest in peace, Daryl Corcoran’ right before I killed him,” she said.
“My heart immediately sank.”
She described her brother as “a very kind gentle soul with a bigger heart.”
“Daryl loved his family and friends and we all love him so much, he was the kind of person who was always there when you needed him,” she said.
‘You planned to kill’
In sentencing Greig, Judge Ann Lyons said she took the life of another man “in a violent attack, sustained, premeditated, planned and fueled by anger.”
“Her violation of him took place in contravention of a [court] order.
“I am satisfied that he planned to kill Mr. Corcoran and intended to commit suicide.
“You had entered the property armed with an ax and two knives, having previously expressed your intention in a Facebook post,” Judge Lyons said.
Judge Lyons also told the court that Greig had violated a court order in the month before the murder and that his “frightening” behavior was “intensive and deliberative.”
“The sentence that I am about to impose publicly denounces his conduct and communicates the absolute condemnation of society to his conduct,” she said.
Judge Lyons said Greig’s actions were “vindictive” and “full of hatred.”
She sentenced him to life in prison for murder with a 20-year parole period.
He was also sentenced to 10 years in jail for robbery at night and five years for violating a court order, both to be served at the same time.
After stabbing Mr Corcoran Greig turned the knife on himself, cutting his own arms, legs and throat.
“Nothing can explain your hideous actions that night,” he added.
“He took the life of another man in a violent, sustained, premeditated, planned and angry attack in front of his estranged wife.”
Judge Lyons sentenced Greig to life in prison for murder, saying, “You will always be serving a life sentence.”
“For the rest of your life you are subject to that sentence.”
Greig will be able to apply for parole after serving 20 years.
Judge Lyons also sentenced Greig to a simultaneous prison term of 10 years for robbery.
