Who was Ogniana Reyes ?

A couple was struck and killed by an SUV while enjoying a bike ride on Miami’s Rickenbacker Causeway bike path on Sunday.

Yaudys Vera, 48, an upholsterer who specialized in boat and auto work, and his girlfriend Ogniana Reyes, 46, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Miami Fire Department when they arrived at the crash site.

Both had children from previous relationships, and police said they died instantly from the impact.

The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee received several citations, but has not been charged with any crime. The incident is believed to have been an accident.

Disturbing photos show how the front of the truck was severely damaged by the impact with Vera and Reyes.

The double tragedy is the latest in a series of incidents involving cyclists and wrecking the Rickenbacker Causeway. While the roadway has a bright green bike lane along both edges, safety campaigners are now calling for a barrier to be installed to prevent future fatalities.

A driver struck and killed two bicyclists on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami on Sunday afternoon. The driver received several citations, but has not been charged with any crime.
Vera and Reyes were biking toward Key Biscayne in the bike lane approaching the William Powell Bridge around 5 p.m. Sunday. m. when they were hit.

Miami police told NBC 6 South Florida that the driver was in an exit lane on the far right side of the road, but he changed lanes to the left to avoid the exit. The driver ran over the bike lane during the lane change and struck bicyclists.

“He ran them over … he killed them instantly,” a witness, Biagio Mazzeo, told NBC 6. “It’s very, very sad.”

Accident

The scene of the accident showed the mangled remains of Vera and Reye’s bikes lying side by side, twisted wheels and bits of twisted metal strewn across the green paint of the bike lane, and two pairs of sunglasses crooked on the pavement. .

The driver’s Jeep SUV was also damaged, his hood crumpled, his headlights went out and his windshield shattered.

Police say the driver was cooperative and remained with police for several hours at the crash site before being released on citations.

“It’s still under investigation, but it’s more likely carelessness than anything to do with alcohol or anything like that,” Miami Police Officer Michael Vega said.

Vera leaves behind two teenage sons and Reyes leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter.

“[Reyes] was a very beautiful, young, very athletic woman,” said Reyes’ neighbor, Maria Sanchez.

A neighbor of Vera’s said that his father and children were close.

“It’s pretty tough because she got along with her kids,” the neighbor said.

Concerns for the safety of cyclists on the Rickenbacker Causeway arose 10 years ago after a hit-and-run bicyclist was killed. Rumble strips were installed along the bike lane of the roadway in response to the accident.

Three years later, another cyclist was killed by a car and the lanes were painted with bright green paint.

Safety advocates are now pushing for considerably more substantial measures to be put in place on the roadway.

Local safety advocate Frankie Ruiz told CBS 4 Miami that he is advocating for a barricade that would completely separate the bike lane from the road.

‘I think that idea is a true separation, that there is a protected lane for cyclists and pedestrians. Because right now all we have are crinkled strips and green paint.
