And although he faced a life in prison, Judge Peter Garling said he had matured considerably since he was arrested and had not started any criminal conduct since he was detained at the Sydney airport in February 2016.
“I am satisfied that he has reasonable prospects for rehabilitation and has abandoned or is on the way to abandoning his extremist ideological views,” Judge Garling said.
After the judge adjourned the session, Amin’s face lit up with a wide smile before he started to walk around the jail cell and hold his face, and finally he dropped to the ground and prayed.wikipedia
Amin was 24 years old when he was found at the airport with mixed martial arts gloves, four camouflage pants and storage devices containing at least 25 publications supporting terrorism, according to the facts of the case.
He told the officers that he possessed the material to dissuade his cousin from joining the forces of the Islamic State, but this was rejected and his passport was canceled.
He was arrested in June 2018 following a search at his home where computers and other items were seized.
His lawyer previously told the court that he had been angered by the treatment of conservative Muslims in Bangladesh, where his parents came from.
He discussed the issue on social media platforms with his cousin and others in Bangladesh, and sought retaliation for perceived injustices against Islam.
But he later told the court as proof that he was “irrational and eager to see changes”.
He “now realizes that violence is not the way … and every life is valuable, killing one life is like killing the rest of humanity,” he said.
Amin posted messages online in 2015 and 2016 about ‘cooking some recipes’ and ‘opening a restaurant’ ‘in Australia’ – a code for making bombs.
The Crown argued that he intended to carry out terrorist acts in Australia as well, pointing to messages with extremists in Bangladesh in which they argued that he used code words to manufacture explosives locally.
Amin said that he just wanted to give the impression that he knew the pump manufacturers in Australia, and it was not really true.
The judge accepted his account that he only intended to carry out violent acts in Bangladesh.
The court was previously told that Amin had become a ‘lost soul’ in his teens when he experienced discrimination and violence after the 9/11 terror attacks.
He later he began to read extremist literature and harbored the desire to go to Syria to fight with the Islamic State.
It will first be eligible for launch in June 2022.
