Norm MacDonald, the deadpan comedian and former “Saturday Night Live” star from 1993 to 1998, died after a nine-year private battle with cancer.

Lori Jo Hoekstra, Macdonald’s friend and production partner, told Deadline that she was with him at the time of his death and that the comedian had been battling cancer for nine years but did not wish to share his health issues with the public.

Macdonald launched his show business career in the comedy clubs of his native Canada, where he honed his trademark laconic style, and went on to compete in the first reality television competition series “Star Search” in 1990.
