Nissa Burkhalter Biography
Nissa Burkhalter was the ex-wife of Ronald DeFeo, an American mass murderer. DeFeo was tried and convicted for the 1974 murders of his father, his mother, two brothers and two sisters in Amityville, Long Island, New York.
Ronald DeFeo was born on September 26, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He was an American mass murderer popularly known as the “Amityville Horror” Killer.
Ronald DeFeo Jr. spread terror on Long Island and beyond by massacring his parents and four of his siblings in 1974. His killing spree served as the inspiration behind the book and movie franchise “The Amityville Horror.”

DeFeo murdered his family
DeFeo used a .35 caliber Marlin lever action rifle to massacre his family members, who were all in bed at the time: Dad Ronald DeFeo Sr., 43, Mom Louise DeFeo, 43, and Dawn brothers, 18, Allison , 13., Marc, 12, and John, 9. Both parents were shot twice, while the brothers were each shot. All the victims were found face down on the bed.
The grisly events served as the inspiration for the 1977 book “The Amityville Horror” and, two years later, the cult classic “The Amityville Horror,” starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder.
Charges – Arrested
At trial, his attorney mounted an insanity defense, claiming that DeFeo heard voices saying his family was conspiring against him. He was convicted in 1975 of six counts of second degree murder and received six sentences of 25 years to life in prison.
DeFeo was scheduled for a parole hearing in July, DOC records online show. In a 2006 jail interview, DeFeo claimed that he only killed his father, his mother, and his older sister, Dawn.
He was serving his 25-year to life sentence at the Sullivan Correctional Center in Fallsburg, New York, according to the state Department of Corrections.
Ronald DeFeo’s cause of death
DeFeo died at the age of 69. Newsday first reported his death. The convicted murderer was taken to Albany Medical Center and pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m.
An autopsy performed by the Albany County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine an official cause of death.
