Nathaniel Kong Biography
Who is Nathaniel Kong?
Nathaniel Kong, 59, was overseeing a visit between David Mora Rojas, 39, and his children when the troubled father killed all four before shooting himself in a tragic murder-suicide, a parishioner told The Post. .
“He was always very generous and all he wanted to do was help [Rojas],” said church member Joseph Wang. “We don’t know how he got the gun because that would never be allowed on church property.” .
Kong, 59, was shot to death at The Church in Sacramento on Wyda Way along with Samarah Mora Gutierrez, 9; Samantha Mora Gutierrez, 10; and Samia Mora Gutierrez, 13, when Rojas opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle, according to the Sacramento County coroner’s office and sheriff’s officials.
Kong had offered to supervise Rojas’s visits with his three daughters, which usually took place in one of the church’s meeting rooms.
He had sat with him and the children many, many times before, but we don’t know why the father suddenly got angry,” Wang said.
“I know the father was under a lot of stress to make ends meet, and I think that’s when the friction between the couple started. He just couldn’t find a steady job, so he asked Kong for help.”
Recently, a judge ordered Rojas to attend anger management courses and his ex-girlfriend, Illeanna Gutiérrez Ríos, filed a protection order against him.
Kong, the church elder, was helping Rojas as he struggled with financial and mental health issues during the pandemic, Wang said.
He met Rojas a few years ago when the church elder was handing out religious tracts on a street corner. Rojas and his then-girlfriend Ríos eventually became members of the church.
When the couple separated, Kong offered Rojas a place to live in the back house of the church property while he tried to rebuild his life.
Rojas had been there for the past few months, while Rios and her three daughters stayed at the home of another church member, Wang said.
According to court records, Ríos requested a restraining order in May, which was granted by a judge. Rojas was allowed visits from her three daughters under the supervision of a friend or church member.
Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened during Monday’s meeting that caused Rojas to point his rifle at her three daughters and her friend before committing suicide.
Rios was not at the church when the shooting occurred, authorities said.
Wang said he and other Church members in Sacramento are devastated by the deaths of the young children and the church leader.
Kong, who desperately tried to help the distraught man, leaves behind a wife and children.
“He was so generous,” Wang said as he broke down in tears. “It is very difficult for me to say more. He served (the church) full time, he dedicated his whole life to people. We are devastated.
