Nancy Niekro and Phil Niekro

Nancy and Phil were married in the mid-1960s. The wedding story the day after their wedding, which was published in the Atlanta Journal, said “Niekro a Two-Timer” and said, “It’s really funny how they’ve been me. Things happening in pairs lately, “smiled the newlywed Niekro. “First of all, my wife and I got married twice over the weekend. We were married for the first time on Saturday night and the minister called Sunday morning and said that he had left something out of the ceremony, so he came to the house that afternoon and remarried us.

The two met on a United Airlines charter flight from Milwaukee to San Francisco, Niekro turned to her friend Gene Oliver and said, “I’m going to marry that girl.” That girl turned out to be Nancy Lee Ferrand, a flight attendant from California. With more crew on board than necessary, Nancy was told she could have the night off.

She looked around and took one of the only available seats, next to Niekro. The two of them sat together and played gin rummy all the way to California. “One of us made two million dollars. I think it was Nancy, ”Phil said. Neither Phil nor Nancy could remember to get the other’s address or phone number, but Nancy’s mother suggested that she send a letter to Phil, in charge of the dance club. She did, and they corresponded for 11 months, without seeing each other rarely, until the middle of the following season.

When US airlines went on strike in July, Nancy was stuck in California without a job. Phil suggested that he buy a one-way train ticket to Richmond.

Phil and Nancy moved into their retirement home in Lake Lanier, north of Atlanta, their three sons, Philip, John, and Michael, all grown up. “We have been able to do things that we have never been able to do before,” said Nancy. Looking back at her husband’s career, “it was a long time to be gone.”

He was 81 years old. “We are heartbroken over the passing of our dear friend, Phil Niekro,” the Braves said in a prepared statement. “Knucksie got into the fabric of the Braves, first in Milwaukee and then in Atlanta. Phil baffled hitters on the field and then he was always the first to join our community activities. It was during those community and fan activities that he communicated with fans as if they were long-lost friends.

“He was a constant presence throughout the years, in our clubhouse, our alumni activities and throughout the Braves Country and we will always be grateful to have him as such an important part of our organization.
