Nafiah Fatima Wiki
Nafiah Fatima Biography
Nafiah Fatima suffered severe burns to his face, eyes, chest and arms after attacking his entrance to Elmont on March 17.
Nafiah Fatima, 21, awaits justice after police say she was assaulted outside her home in New York.
In a press release from the Nassau County Police Department, officials confirmed that the attack took place around 8:15 p.m. outside the victim’s residence on Arlington Avenue in Elmont.
Although authorities have not released the woman’s name, she has been identified as Nafiah Fatima on a GoFundMe page created by her neighbor and friend of hers Shazia Anjum.
According to the police, she Fatima was walking down the hall when “a stranger approached her from behind her” and she was carrying a white cup with a dark substance.
Authorities said the man threw the substance in Fatima’s face and then fled from her.
The entire encounter was recorded on a neighbor’s surveillance camera and later posted on the GoFundMe page. Anjum’s 42-second video shows Fatima unloading her car with her mother and following her to her home before being attacked a few feet from the front door.
On the GoFundMe page, Anjum said that she later discovered that the substance was “a dark brown acid that is known to cause blindness and severe burns.”
Anjum said the forward knew how dangerous it was because he was wearing gloves at the time, noting that Hofstra University student Fatima almost died after the terrible encounter.
“If the acid got into Nafiah’s lungs, she would be dead. When Nafiah screamed, the acid entered her mouth and burned her tongue and throat, preventing her from breathing, ”Anjum explained. “When Nafiah ran home and her parents saw her, they immediately tried to help her, but the acid burned her hands and forearms.”
“If her parents hadn’t been home to help her and hadn’t called 911 right away, she wouldn’t have been successful,” Anjum added at the fundraiser.
After the incident, police said Fatima suffered “serious physical injuries” and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Her injuries included “severe burns” to her face, eyes, chest and arms, according to GoFundMe.
“Nafiah was wearing contact lenses that night and the acid dissolved the contact lenses in her eyes,” Anjum added on the page. “We don’t know if Nafiah will see him again.”
At this time, it does not appear that the police have identified the suspect behind the attack or the motive for the attack.
In his press release, the man was described as being around 6 feet 2 inches tall with a slim physique. He also wore a black hoodie and gloves the night of the attack.
A spokesman for the Nassau Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
On Saturday, Anjum launched the GoFundMe page asking for donations to help Fatima and her family cope with the rising costs of the accident.
To date, the site has raised more than $ 123,000.
“Your donation from hers will be used for uninsured medical expenses, home security, legal fees and lost profits, as Nafiah and her mother are unemployed during this time,” Anjum wrote. “Nafiah was incredibly strong during this terrible event. Nafiah’s only wish is for the attacker to be captured so she can feel safe at home. “
