Who is Nabria Varner?

Nabria Varner, 13, was attending her second week of high school when she heard gunshots in her building.

Her mother, Sashua Patterson, was sitting at home working remotely when she got the call.

“She was scared. She said, ‘Mommy, please come get me,'” Patterson said. Nabria, finally back to face-to-face classes after remote learning due to COVID-19, told her mother that she was “bending over” and hiding inside the school gym.

A student was killed in the shooting inside a high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Wednesday, sparking panic among students, staff and parents as several schools across the district closed for hours.

A suspect was in custody, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night. It was the second school shooting in the state in three days.

Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson held back tears Wednesday night when she announced that the Mount Tabor High School student died after being shot.

Winston-Salem Sheriff’s Office and Police officers responded to a call at 12:07 p.m. and they located a student with a gunshot wound, Thompson said. First responders tried to save his life and transported him to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, where he died from his injuries, Thompson said.

Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. said the victim’s mother wanted her identity released and the office identified the student as William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr.

“We experience something that we see on television across the country,” said Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines. “Today, we face it head-on.”

On Wednesday night, the Sheriff’s Office said the suspect “was detained without incident.”

The students were still meeting with their parents and guardians Wednesday night, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“It’s like a punch to the stomach and it takes your breath away, not knowing if your children are safe, your friend’s children are safe, your neighbor’s children are safe. And you are in agony until you find out what is. happening and what has continued, “said Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill. “As a parent or district attorney, there really is no worse feeling you can imagine.”

Two officers were inside the building when the shooting occurred, Kimbrough said. More law enforcement officers were in the building “within minutes,” Superintendent Tricia McManus said.

EMS tended to “students who were naturally freaked out by this,” Kimbrough said. At least one student had seizures, Thompson said.

Previously, parents, desperate for information, parked their cars on the sidewalks several blocks from the high school while police pulled traffic off campus.

Christopher Johnson said his son told him that he heard the shots while he was in the school gym and the students were told to hide because there was an active shooter on campus.

“You see things like this in the media,” said Johnson, whose son was still at school waiting for a ride to a pickup point. “It’s scary to know that this time he reached out and touched you. My son is not a victim, but he is part of this and will probably remember him forever.”

Wednesday’s shooting occurred on the eighth day of face-to-face classes for the school district. The incident comes two days after a shooting at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina.

On Monday, a 15-year-old student shot another minor when a fight between several students turned into a chaotic scene on a school walkway. The victim was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and the suspect faces four charges, including an attempted first degree murder.

“For the second time this week, we have seen a shooting at a North Carolina school,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said in a statement. “We must work to ensure the safety of students and educators, quickly stop the shooter, and keep weapons off school grounds.”

McManus said the school district would send crisis teams to help students and staff. City officials said counselors would be available to speak to youth at Friends Baptist Church Wednesday night.
