Who is Murtuz Medzhidov?

A prime minister’s son pushed his girlfriend from a fourth-floor window at a top Russian university that trains spies and diplomats.

Murtuz Medzhidov, 26, killed “bright student” Tomiris Baysafa, 21, by pushing her 40 feet to her death through a window, a court found.

He has been incarcerated for 13 years in a strict regime penal colony.

The incident occurred in April 2018 when the 21-year-old suffered multiple fractures following the fall.

Investigation

Police launched an investigation as the student died a few weeks later.

The verdict came after a campaign for justice by the mother of the dead girl who had protested Russia’s judicial “lawlessness” when Medzhidov was acquitted a year ago.

The judge at the initial trial was seen as “extremely supportive” of Medzhidov, the son of an influential former prime minister of the Dagestan oil and gas region, Mukhtar Medzhidov.

Grieving mother Zhanna Akhmetova, 42, had complained that her daughter had been translated as “an absolutely sick psycho-emotional person”, and convincing forensic evidence had been ignored.

She had called for justice from the presidents of Russia and her native Kazakhstan, Vladimir Putin and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

A jury in a closed-door retrial unanimously found Medzhidov guilty of murder at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he trains diplomats and spies.

The mother had become a detective to meticulously collect forensic evidence in the case.

But she claimed that the original court hearing was biased against her daughter.

The detailed forensic expert evidence of how she “hit her, twisted her arm and threw her out the window” was ignored, as well as the result of a polygraph test on the accused.

Her legal team claimed that the respected institute has acted to avoid a murder conviction at its facility.

She said: “The courtroom was hell.

“I don’t wish this on anyone. Never.
