A Louisiana judge resigned after video captured her repeated use of the word n as she and her family viewed surveillance footage of a black robbery suspect attempting to enter her home.
Michelle Odinet, 52, resigned her seat in the Lafayette city court on Friday, just weeks after the video surfaced using racist language.
“I take full responsibility for the hurtful words I used to describe the individual who stole the vehicles from my home,” Odinet wrote in her resignation letter to the Chief Justice of Louisiana.
“I am sorry for the pain I have caused to my community and I ask for your forgiveness, as my words did not promote the public’s trust and integrity in the judiciary,” she added.

The short clip captured one of Odinet’s sons saying ‘And mom is screaming n **** r, n **** r’, to which a female voice responds ‘We have a n **** r’. He is a black, like a cockroach.
Since then, the Republican judge has come under fire for her racist insults, and local officials and community members have asked her to resign.
The full video had shown Odinet and his family laughing as they viewed the footage with other members making similar racist comments and spitting profanity.
Ronald Handy Arrested and Charged
Ronald Handy, 59, who is black, was arrested and charged with two counts of petty theft and is being held in the Lafayette Parish jail on a $ 10,000 bond.
Handy was seen being shot down by two members of the Odinet family in the front garden of his home during the attempted robbery.
At the time, Odinet claimed that he had taken a sedative when the video was recorded and does not recall the comments he made.
“My children and I were victims of an armed robbery at our home,” he told The Current.
The police were called and the assailant was arrested. The incident shook me to my core and my mental state was fragile. ‘
‘Anyone who knows me and my husband knows that this is contrary to the way we live our lives.
“I am deeply sorry and ask for your forgiveness and understanding as my family and I grapple with the emotional aftermath of this armed robbery.”
Handy, however, was not found with a weapon at the time of his arrest.
When the suspect saw the victim arrive, the suspect tried to flee on foot, but was quickly caught by the victim. The victim held the suspect until officers arrived, ‘the Lafayette Police Department report said.
Her excuses have not swayed critics who say she should be removed from office.
“As a proud black man, and the Sheriff of the City of Lafayette, I strongly believe that Judge Odinet must be held accountable,” Lafayette City Chief Reggie Thomas told the Acadiana Advocate.
I am sure that people of color will find it impossible to trust that they will be treated fairly and equally when they have to appear before Judge Odinet.
‘This kind of language cannot be accepted or tolerated by anyone, especially those who serve as leaders in our city.
‘It is up to Judge Odinet to remember the oath she took, and if she remains on the bench, find a way to regain the trust of’ everyone ‘Lafayette, especially African-Americans. A mere ineffective and weak apology will not suffice.
State Sen. Gerald Boudreaux was also disturbed by the comments and is working on an investigation.
“I respectfully request and will officially request that the Louisiana Judicial Commission investigate ethical conduct and actions associated with recent events,” he said in a statement.
Odinet had been elected in November 2020 after winning 57 percent
Odinet had been elected in November 2020 after winning 57 percent of the vote against candidate Jules Edwards III.
He took over the Division A seat for Judge Francie Bouillion at Lafayette City Court.
He previously had worked as an assistant district attorney in New Orleans and Lafayette, as well as a law firm where he handled insurance defense cases.
Since she was elected, she has planned to start veterans court programs, working on financial assistance methods and creating lockers for cell phones to keep them out of the courtroom.
New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams ordered a full review of all cases handled by Odinet during her time as a prosecutor nearly 30 years ago.
Odinet, a member of a prominent New Orleans family of doctors, lawyers, and philanthropists, served as a prosecutor and assistant district attorney in Orleans Parish in the 1990s under her maiden name, Michelle Miller.
