Michel Zecler Biography                                                    Michel Zecler Wiki

A black man who was beaten by several French police officers said he sought justice after posting police videos in which he was repeatedly beaten with batons and tear gas for no apparent reason.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin ordered the suspension of the agents involved in the case.

The incident occurred as the administration of President Emmanuel Macron was pushing for a new bill that would limit the ability to film police and trigger protests from fearful civil rights groups and journalists. Police brutality does not allow it to be discovered and with impunity.

The videos, first published Thursday by French news site Loopsider, show the violent arrest of a music producer, Michel Zecler, in the 17th arrondissement or district of the French capital on Saturday.

Video footage captured by The Associated Press, captured by both a surveillance camera inside the studio and neighbors outside, shows three officers following Zecler to his music studio, where they are seen repeatedly hitting him and hitting him with a stick.

Michel Zecler told The Associated Press that he feels “good” now that “the truth has come out.”

“I want to understand why people in police uniforms attacked me. I really want justice because I believe in justice in my country, ”he said.

Michel Zecler said officials repeatedly insulted him, including a very strong racist epithet.

He added that he still does not understand why the agents decided to arrest him. He suffered injuries to his head, forearms and legs.

His lawyer, Hafida El Ali, said: “He asked them what they want if they want to verify their identity. … You kept hitting him, the video of violence (in the studio) lasts 12 minutes. ”

At one point, the officers called for reinforcements and left. They then fired tear gas at the studio so that those inside could come out, according to El Ali.

El Ali said nine other people who recorded music in the studio’s basement were also beaten.

“They are always beaten and thrown to the ground outside, and at that moment a policeman sees them on tape,” he said. Then the violence stops. Zecler was arrested.

“I am obviously shocked by these images,” Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said in a televised interview. “There are racist policemen, lawyers or bakers, but to say that the police are racist is not true.”

Michel Zecler’s lawyer emphasized the value of the videos in his client’s case.

“These videos are critical because my client was initially arrested … for violence against public authorities,” El Ali said. “This is very serious. The reality is that my client could be in jail if we didn’t have these videos. ”

Darmanin tweeted that the agency investigating allegations of police misconduct, the Inspectorate General of the National Police, known by the French acronym IGPN, was investigating the case, saying: “I want a disciplinary procedure as soon as possible. ”

The Paris police headquarters said in a statement that the IGPN would try to determine the exact circumstances of the man’s arrest.

The Paris prosecutor’s office is also investigating the actions of the police. Prosecutors said Thursday they had abandoned Zecler’s trial, which began on the day of his arrest, and instead opened an investigation into “acts of violence by a person in public office” and “false testimony.”

According to the newspaper Le Parisien, Zecler learned the day after the arrest, according to a written report of the officials’ statements, of not wearing the mask, mandatory in Paris outdoors amid the coronavirus pandemic. He seemed “nervous” and “smelled strongly of drugs.” They said it would be “dangerous” with them.

Michel Zecler’s lawyer said: “My client has never committed acts of violence against the police … He has not even defended himself.”

This is the second such investigation into police brutality in Paris this week that was sparked by video footage. The government ordered an internal police investigation on Tuesday after officers were caught on camera pulling migrants out of tents and deliberately tripping over one while evacuating a protest camp.

On the same day, the lower house of the French parliament passed a bill aimed at strengthening the local police and better protecting all public officials. In particular, posting photos of agents is a crime.
