A year ago I finished a joyous run at @ operaaustralia’s @officialevita and for sweeneytoddau in rehearsal. Queen’s birthday on Friday was a long weekend, I did regular tests that week, which would lead to other tests. My doctor asked me to come to his last appointment for the day as he needed to spend some time with me. He also said I should bring someone with me. My wife Jane was on the next plane from Sydney, and then we sat with my doctor to hear the news. Definitely stage 4 cancer. We were not sure which type. It was now a three-day wait to see an expert at home in Sydney. We went and had an amazing Italian food. The next week, Sweeney had more tests and technical rehearsals in Sydney, but I managed to come up to the opening night, but I was not allowed to perform because I had a lung biopsy that day (also something about narrowing my lung songs). Pfft!) – But my Pirelli has over every incredible authority 😉 So, a year … Germ Cell Cancer and will not go away. Chemo, abdominal surgery, a brain attack, more chemo, radiation therapy, high dose chemo with stem cell transplant, whole brain radiation, lung surgery, and now, more chemo. Just one step forward, two steps back, continuous testing saves your life every day as a “take something every day” mantra not only physically but also mentally. I think the world feels like this now. It’s not a bad philosophy. I never felt lonely throughout. My wife is always with me, my family is always visiting at the end of the phone and when this crazy world allows, and I was amazed by a community of friends who stole me literally last night. None of us can overcome many of the challenges we face without others. I don’t know how long my path is, but every time I stop there is someone waiting to hug. Here is to support each other in everything. My love and thanks to everyone in my sphere. #liveon #lifeisyummy #kickitinthedick @imperfectlyperfectcampaign @ruokday @chris_obrien_lifehouse
