Who is Mia Peers ?
A young mother who starred in the Channel 4 program Educating Greater Manchester has been jailed for five years for hiding a gun and ammunition for her boyfriend.
Peers received the drawstring bag from her anonymous partner from her, who told him to hide it and that she “don’t ask questions” and “don’t let anyone get near.”
Manchester Crown Court heard that she was suspicious, but did not realize that the bag contained a firearm until a week later, when she was at a friend’s house with two other children and masked gunmen broke into the property.
They pointed knives at Peers’ throat and demanded that they surrender the weapon, before fleeing empty-handed when they realized they had aimed at the wrong house.
Detectives later interviewed her about the attack, but she did not tell them about her package and when she returned home she looked inside the drawstring bag and found the gun.
She told her mother, who in turn told the police.
Accuser Jane Dagnall said: “She told the officers where exactly the bag was and she told police how she got under the stairs and told them she was too scared to tell them at first.”
Testing revealed that the pistol’s serial number had been erased and it had been adapted to fire semi-automatic and automatic rounds.

Her lawyer Jacob Dyer said: ‘She was in shock after the attack and then told her mother about the gun.
Clearly she feared the consequences for her. She was extremely vulnerable to exploitation and had some kind of crush on her partner.
‘These are exceptional circumstances. A custodial sentence would be a tragic outcome for her.
But Justice Timothy Smith said: ‘The intention of Parliament is to deter gun culture and to deter gun use and gun violence in areas where gun culture exists and prevails.
“This is prevalent in areas of Manchester where there is organized crime and when these weapons are on the street they are used to kill and inflict serious injuries.
‘They are used to impose terror on others and to enforce criminal activity.
“Those who participate in these acts need a safe place to store their weapons.
“Those who seek refuge for these weapons are looking for people exactly like you, and that is why there has to be a deterrent.
“It is hard for someone in your position, but that is the consequence of a deterrent sentence and it is not something arbitrary or disproportionate.
This is one of those sentencing exercises that concerns the court due to its particular circumstances.
“You’re young, you have no prior convictions, but the person who brought the gun was someone you knew had some kind of reputation, but you didn’t ask any questions.”
Educating Greater Manchester he followed the students of Harrop Fold School in Little Hulton.
Peers appeared on the show when she was 15 years old, in 2017.

At the time, her mother Nicola hers said: ‘Whatever Mia decides, we will always support her in her decision about the baby.
“But I always wanted her to go to school and take her exams.”
“I have said from day one that everyone will judge, but you have to show people that yes, you were 15 years old and you got pregnant.
But you kept going to school, you took your exams, and you did the best you could. She was not the first and she definitely she will not be the last. She is a fantastic mom. ‘
