“We are elated and hope this serves as a conclusion for the family,” Columbia Deputy Chief of Police Jeremiah Hunter said Thursday, according to the report. “Lots of people came together to help us with this research. … The detectives are still on the scene and will be for quite some time. ”
It is not yet clear if Elledge will face additional charges, according to Police Chief Geoff Jones.
“The investigative process will have to unfold,” Jones said. “We will be thorough and anything we obtain for additional charges, we will consult with the prosecutor’s office.”
Throughout the investigation, evidence indicated that Ji’s body was in the Lamine River at or near the Missouri Route 41 bridge, the newspaper reported.
After suspending the search for Ji’s body in June, police began again in October, the first anniversary of the woman’s disappearance, when lowered river levels revealed that a temporary dam was still intact, according to the local report.
The remains were found in an isolated wooded area of the state park, about 30 feet from the highway, according to the report. No leads from the investigation had previously pointed to that section of the park.
Near her remains were found a driver’s license, credit and bank cards, as well as other documents and clothing that belonged to Ji, according to Hunter. Now, an identification process will continue, including DNA testing and dental records, he said.
“As a parent, I can only imagine how important it is to have some degree of closure in a tragedy like this,” Jones said. “Once the evidence reaches the lab, we hope we can do just that.”
