A grand jury has sued Jason Michael Walker, 47, who now lives in Pulaski County, for the murder of Thomas Joseph “Tommy Joe” Wideman, 51; Deborah Wideman, 48 years old; and Melissa Wideman, who was eight months pregnant. He was also charged with feticide for causing fetal death, serious bodily injury, and first degree arson.
The family was found on March 22, 2002 when a passing truck driver called Rebecca about reporting a house fire in the city. When the fire was out, firefighters found the Widemans; An autopsy revealed that all three had been shot dead before the fire started.
The Turner County Sheriff’s Office called for help immediately, but despite extensive investigations that led to the development of several suspects, no arrests were made, leaving family members frustrated at the lack of progress. The Widemans were prominent residents of the Central Georgia District: Tommy Joe Wideman was the district’s tax officer and his wife owned the Oak Tree bridal boutique in downtown Ashburn. Melissa was a student.
The investigation was reassigned in 2014, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. During a review of the case, a new witness came in and “identified a white male who appeared to be leaving the Wideman residence during the period when the murders were taking place.” both early investigators and new investigators had received.
Investigators presented their case to Tifton Judicial Circuit District Attorney Paul Bowden, who presented it to a Turner County grand jury on Tuesday. This grand jury indicted Walker.
Walker was arrested and detained at the Turner County Jail Wednesday, the GBI said, and Bowden’s office will take up the charge.
