Who is Meirion Roberts?
Meirion Roberts, 26, was drinking at a work party in December 2020 before driving her car into a telegraph pole, killing her colleague Lewis Morgan, 20, Swansea Crown Court was told. .
The couple had decided to “take a drive” in Roberts’s white Vauxhall Corsa when he skidded off the road and flipped the roof over.
Morgan suffered a severe head injury in the crash and died at the scene in the village of Blaenau, South Wales.
Snapchat videos
A court heard that Roberts was previously caught on Snapchat videos drinking from an alcohol bottle while driving.
The footage also included the car’s speedometer showing it being driven at up to 100 mph.
Mr. Roberts, from South Wales, admits causing the death through careless driving, but denies causing the death through dangerous driving.
The court heard that they both worked together at Fine-Edge Construction Ltd before the accident in December 2020.
Company director Philip Jones said the firm had booked two tables at The Cottage Inn for a three-hour stay.
He said that he and his employees drank “five or six pints with our food,” adding that Roberts drank cider.
Mr Jones said: ‘Roberts and I were the last to leave. Roberts said his girlfriend was picking him up but he went to the wrong pub.
Swansea Crown Court heard that Morgan had been captured on Snapchat videos after leaving the pub while drinking from a bottle of alcohol while driving.
The footage also included the car’s speedometer showing it being driven at up to 100 mph.
Victim
Colleague Llyr Williams said he received a Snapchat video of the victim, Mr. Morgan, after the work meeting.
He said he showed Morgan as a front-seat passenger in a car he believed Roberts was driving.
Williams said: “I was concerned that Roberts might have been driving under the influence of alcohol. However, I did not contact anyone to raise the alarm.
“Lewis seemed like he was having fun and was good friends with Roberts.”
The court heard that Roberts was seen on CCTV after 8:00 p.m. m. when he went into a Bargain Booze store to buy alcohol.
The car was later seen ‘speeding and swerving’ in a 30 mph zone through the town’s streets before flipping onto its roof.
Investigation
The court heard that speed investigators estimated the car was traveling at up to 48 mph when it crashed.
The fatal accident on Penygroes Road in Blaenau, Carmarthenshire took place in December 2020
Roberts gave an alcohol reading of 54 mg per 100 ml of blood (the legal limit is 80) more than five hours after the crash.
Dr. Paul Williams, a breath alcohol testing expert, said he estimated Roberts’ alcohol level would have been over the limit when the crash occurred.
Prosecutor Carina Hughes said: ‘Roberts was not only driving under the influence of alcohol, he was driving while he was consuming alcohol. He was speeding and at one point exceeded the speed limit for more than a mile. At one point he was driving 100 mph.
“He could not control his vehicle and that is why he was seen swerving on more than one occasion. The defendant fell far short of what would be expected of a careful and competent driver.
Roberts, from Ammanford, South Wales, admitted causing the death through careless driving, but denies causing the death through dangerous driving.
